General information about the facades of their array
Wooden kitchen fronts are an example of style and good taste. They contribute to the creation of a cozy atmosphere in the kitchen, which is highly appreciated by both designers and ordinary kitchen owners. Everything you need to know about such facades is in the next section.
Materials for the manufacture of facades
There are several coniferous and deciduous trees that are used to create facades. Each of them has its own characteristics, which are described below.
- Oak. Such facades will become a real highlight of the interior. They are distinguished by their durability and rich assortment of shades.
- Ash. In terms of strength characteristics, ash facades are not much inferior to oak ones. They have a large, straight-grain texture and a yellowish-white color.
- Cherry or sweet cherry. They have excellent decorative characteristics. Facades made of this material have a refined pink or red hue and a softer (in comparison with oak and ash) texture.
- Beech. Such facades, unlike other types of wood, do not have a clear structure. The wood itself is very durable and has a palette of shades from gray to reddish.
- Birch tree. Especially light, light, but at the same time durable wood. Has a light color palette (from whitish to light brown).
- Alder. Ideal for a variety of design ideas. It can be reddish brown, with a yellowish or white tint.
- Pine. The cheapest wood. Has a pronounced texture and a light yellow tint.
For the production of premium kitchen furniture, mahogany and ebony, cedar and other species of beautiful wood can also be used.
On production of a kitchen facade only well-dried workpieces are used. The optimum moisture content of wood is 6-10%. Also important requirements are the absence of large knots, cracks, resin pockets and insect damage.
After machining, the workpieces for the production of facades are impregnated with antiseptic compounds that prevent the development of putrefactive processes. Finished facades are varnished to give them a more attractive appearance and to protect the wood from moisture, high temperature and ultraviolet radiation.
In addition to natural wood, veneer can be used in the production of solid wood facades. It is a thin plate made of expensive wood, intended for gluing to the base. Veneer is used most often for decorating the internal parts of complex facades - panels.
Facade design options
Depending on the design and manufacturing method, solid wood facades are divided into two main groups - solid and paneled.
-
Solid facades. They are a massive board made of a selected wood species, carefully dried, treated with antiseptics and varnished.
The board is cut to the required size, after which a groove is applied to it with special cutters - the so-called "false panel".
This option is very expensive, since the price of a piece of valuable wood is directly proportional to its size. Among other things, a one-piece facade is more susceptible to temperature deformations, therefore, it requires special protective treatment.
-
Paneled facades. They have a more complex structure. The paneled kitchen facade consists of a strapping - a frame made of wooden planks, and a panel - an internal filling of the strapping.
As filling can be used as solid wood, and veneered panel made of MDF or chipboard. Unlike a solid one, a paneled facade is less susceptible to deformation when the wood dries out or damp.
Pros and cons of solid wood facades
Since facades for solid wood headsets are very expensive, before buying them, you should carefully weigh all their advantages and disadvantages. This is the only way you can be completely confident in your choice. This section presents the main pros and cons of this option.
Why are solid wood doors good
The list of advantages of facades, for the production of which only natural wood is used, is impressive. These include:
- Excellent decorative qualities. In appearance, wooden facades cannot be confused with any others. No matter how hard the manufacturers of films for lamination of MDF try, they cannot fully convey the charm and attractiveness of the texture of natural wood.
- Sustainability. Since wood is a natural material, all elements of furniture made from it are fully ecological. Modern technologies for the production of wooden facades completely exclude the use of toxic impregnations, which makes the furniture absolutely safe.
- Long service life. Proper care can ensure a very long life for a solid wood facade. Another confirmation of this is the museum furniture, which is hundreds of years old - but it still looks quite decent.
- Variability in design. Thanks to the various types of wood used for the manufacture of cabinet doors, you have the opportunity to choose an option with almost any design.
And at the end, one more argument: solid kitchen facades, as well as all natural wood furniture, are out of fashion. They do not depend on trends and trends in interior design, and therefore will always be "in place and in time."
Cons of wooden facades
Alas, the wooden facades were not without drawbacks. Which ones can make you refuse to buy?
- High price. The cost of such a facade cannot be low by definition. If you want an inexpensive solid wood facade, you will have to do it yourself, otherwise you will not!
- Difficulty in leaving. It is necessary to take care of such a facade very carefully, using only suitable detergents.
- UV exposure. Under the influence of sunlight, the tree may fade somewhat. Someone may like this gradual aging effect, but it is still better to protect the facade from ultraviolet radiation.
- Simplicity of forms. Another disadvantage of wooden facade for the kitchen can be considered simplicity of forms: if made of plasticor laminated MDF, both straight and curved facades are made, then only doors of strict shapes are made from natural wood.
Making the facade yourself
Making cabinet doors with your own hands will help you significantly save on the cost of the headset. Below are detailed instructions for making a paneled facade.
The most important elements of such elements are strapping (frames consisting of boards with longitudinal grooves) and panels (internal panels with shaped cutters in the center). During the assembly process, the panels will need to be inserted into the straps and fixed with glue along with self-tapping screws.

Take measurements. Measure the parameters of your kitchen cabinets, and based on the data obtained, determine the dimensions of the doors. To do this, subtract 3 mm from the width and height of the opening. You can calculate the parameters of the panel by adding 2 cm to the total width of the beams. For one door, you will need 5 elements - one infill, as well as 2 crossbars and vertical posts. |
|
Cut out the details. Using an electric jigsaw, cut the array into racks and crossbars. Using a milling machine, make grooves with a depth of 10 mm and a width of 6 mm in the side cut of each element. At the ends of the crossbars, form longitudinal spikes with a size of 10x6 mm. On a piece of plywood, mark up and cut out the panel. Sand the surface of the boards, and sand the edges with sandpaper. |
|
Start assembly. Insert the edges of the panel into the grooves of the vertical post, slide the lower crossbar onto the plywood. Connect the sidewalls with the bar's spikes. Then fasten the top bar. If all the elements are easily joined together and fit snugly together, you can disassemble all the spikes, grooves and edges of the panel. Now coat all joints with wood glue and reassemble the base. Clamps can be used to enhance fixation. |
|
Take care of finishing. After the glue dries, sand all the joints, and treat the door itself with an antiseptic compound. Then treat the surface with paint or varnish. Instead of plywood, glass, colored polycarbonate, thin board or plastic panel can be inserted into the frame. | |
Install the hardware. At the end of the finishing work, fix the hinges and handles on the walls of the box. |
