During the renovation of an apartment or a house, you can come up with many interesting and beautiful "chips" that will not add flavor to the interior and will decorate it with dignity, but will also be very functional.

Kitchens with niches in the walls can be confidently attributed to such "originality". As a rule, such niches are made either under the window or just anywhere on the wall.

How exactly such an element of decor is made, we will consider a little later, but for now we will ask one very simple question ...

Why do you need a niche at all

Of course, it cannot be said that a niche in an apartment is necessary, but in some cases it will be more than relevant.

Niche that serves as a locker

Compact cabinet under the window

Everything is simple here - most often such a niche is made under the window in the kitchen in the place where the radiator is usually located and usually it is shallow. And the radiator itself is simply shifted to the side.

In such a cabinet you can store cereals, tableware, banks, conservation, and basically anything. As a rule, the “cabinet” niche is made when the kitchen area is very small and literally every centimeter of usable space is valued.

The next option.

Niche "refrigerator"

Niche for storing food

Niche for storing food

This design is done only under the window and only for storing food, while the radiator also moves to the side. The difference from the first option is mainly that a niche in a kitchen of this type is made deep - that is, in a brick the maximum possible space is knocked out to the masonry so that a thin layer of the wall remains, which will be better cooled.

Advice: try to make sure that the doors of such a "refrigerator" have good thermal insulation. Only in this case cold air from the street will not penetrate into the kitchen.

A refrigerator niche is also relevant in the case when the kitchen area is small.

Or, as an option, it is needed when the electricity is often cut off in the apartment, and accordingly the refrigerator does not work at this time, and there are any perishable foods in it. In this case, such a niche in the kitchen is very helpful.

And one more situation in which the niche gets special attention.

Niche - as an element of radiator decoration

Radiator masking

Radiator masking

Everything is quite clear and simple here - the purpose of such a niche is simply to disguise the radiator and make the space under the window beautiful. In this case, the snip is in no way violated, since usually no additional recess is made for the radiator, which means that the wall remains completely intact.

The maximum that is done with the masonry in this case is the inner plane and the corners of the niche are leveled. And a beautiful lattice usually acts as the main element of the decor.

In principle, the positive aspects of the location of the recessed niches under the window are clear, but there are also a couple of negative points:

  1. due to the displacement of the radiators to the side, a layer of warm air near the window disappears. And this, to one degree or another, reduces the temperature in the room;
  2. with an illiterate and careless approach, the wall can be deepened to such an extent that it will be enough to press harder on the remaining layer, and it will simply simply fall out.

Do not forget about these two factors - dismantle the masonry carefully and carefully, and make the doors from a material that will not allow air to pass through well from the outside. In principle, these can be ordinary wooden or plastic doors, sheathed from the inside with expanded polystyrene foam, for example.

By the way, if the walls in the house are thick enough, then the so-called a kitchen in a niche is when recesses are made in the walls in the right places and shelves with doors are arranged or not.

But, as an illustrative example, let's consider step by step how a niche is actually made in the wall in the kitchen under the window.

How to make a niche

Let's say our wall is made of brick and thick enough for such a project. We need the following inventory:

  1. grinder and diamond disc for stone;
  2. perforator with a drill and impact blade;
  3. hammer and chisel;
  4. buckets and a tool for plastering (drywall, in principle, can also be used, but still the layer of plaster will hold on more reliably and longer).

From consumables you need the following:

  • sand and cement;
  • for finishing the inner plane, putty with paint or tiles;

Tip: make the interior design of a niche in the kitchen, taking into account that on the plane under the window it can condensation accumulates, and accordingly the more resistant to moisture the coating is, the longer it will be will serve. In this case, the tile is an ideal option, and its price does not particularly "bite". In addition, the tiles are easy to clean and contain a minimum of microbes, which is a very important factor - after all, food will be stored near this surface.

  • putty knife, primer and brush.

Basically, with such a set, you can safely start work.

Deepening a niche

  1. We take a puncher and drill the outline of the future perimeter of our cabinet.
  2. If you need to knock out a lot of stone, then make more holes with a drill - this way it will be easier for the masonry to crumble during the blows of a chisel or a perforator blade.
  3. We change the drill in the perforator to a blade and knock out the desired areas. At the same time, do not forget to make sure that you do not "leave" on the street.

If the hammer drill bit does not cover any areas or just slides over them, then try to cut them with a grinder. If this did not work out, then, most likely, you will have to strain yourself and work with a hand chisel and a sledgehammer. Or try to beat off a larger fragment of the wall than necessary - then plaster it.

Once everything is ready, you can consider how to close up a niche in the kitchen in the wall.

Niche finishing and decor

How to decorate a niche in the wall in the kitchen? In this case, we will plaster the niche, then sheathe it with tiles, and then hang the doors.

Tip: before you start working with plaster, clean the wall surface from dust as much as possible and prime the plane. Otherwise, there is a risk that the plaster layer will subsequently "move away" from the brick.

So, after preparing the surface, we prepare the solution and plaster the niche. Then you must wait until the plaster is completely dry - only after that you can glue the tiles.

After the tiles are laid and the glue has also dried, you can consider how the kitchen with a niche in the wall will look like - that is, select the color of the doors, their texture, etc.

Naturally, the most important thing here is to adhere to the general concept of room design. Fortunately, it is not difficult to choose the material for the doors today - the range of panels in the store is simply impressive.

The doors are usually fastened simply - on standard hinges. The main thing is to do everything carefully and make sure that the flaps close as tightly as possible. This is especially true for a niche that will be used as a refrigerator - after all, it is important that a cool temperature is kept inside the cabinet.

It turns out that which kitchen design with a niche (that is, doors) to choose depends on the following factors:

  1. your tastes and preferences;
  2. budget opportunities;
  3. skills and experience in the repair business.

However, if there is still no experience and this brief instruction did not help you much, then watch the video at the end of the article - perhaps after that the process will become more clear (read also article "Ergonomics of the kitchen - creating a comfortable and practical interior").

Happy renovation!
