On various Internet resources, discussions periodically arise about whether it is possible to hang kitchen cabinets on drywall. And although the opinions are different, but still in the overwhelming majority of cases, the participants in the discussion come to the conclusion that it is still possible to do this, although it will have to work hard.

Below we will describe several ways that will allow you to hang not only kitchen modules, but also other heavy objects on the plasterboard cladding.

Installation of furniture on plasterboard sheathing is a difficult task!

Installation of furniture on plasterboard sheathing is a difficult task!

Installation on a mortgage

The main difficulty of attaching the lockers to the gypsum plasterboard wall is that gypsum board is enough fragile material, therefore it does not seem to use standard fasteners possible. By the weight of the cabinet, the anchor will simply break through the plasterboard sheathing - and therefore only self-tapping screws for the lightest elements (paintings, decorative shelves, etc.) can be attached directly to the plasterboard.

But what to do if you need to hang a large kitchen furniture module?

The easiest way is to use the so-called mortgage:

  • The mortgage is a fairly thick board or wooden beam, which is attached to the load-bearing wall or to the main partition using anchor bolts.

Advice!
For bookmarking, it is best to use a pine bar with a thickness of at least 40 mm, without knots and cracks.

  • The installation of the embedded beam is carried out at the stage of assembling the frame for plasterboard sheathing. We cut the timber to size and attach it to the wall where it is planned to hang kitchen cabinets in the future.
  • After installing the mortgage and completing the installation of the lathing, we perform the wall cladding with plasterboard and its finishing.
  • When hanging modules on the wall, we use sufficiently long fasteners that pass through the gypsum board and are securely fixed in the wood.

This method of fastening is one of the most reliable, and the price of such a solution is quite low, since standard fasteners are used. But it can be realized only if we know in advance at what height the upper part of the kitchen set will be fixed..

Note!
All the methods for attaching heavy parts to gypsum boards given here are shown in video tutorials posted on our website.
If you have not previously encountered this type of work, we recommend that you first practice on simpler objects.

Installation without a foundation bar

Through fastening to anchor

FROM hanging kitchen shelves and cabinets on the mortgage beam, everything seems to be simple. But what to do in a situation when you have to mount the kitchen on ready-made gypsum plasterboard walls?

Here, too, there are several ways that will make it possible to perform a fairly reliable fastening of kitchen cabinets to drywall.

One of these methods is through fastening to anchor bolts:

Through anchor

Through anchor

  • First, we apply markings to the gypsum plasterboard wall, determining the attachment points for the hinged elements.
  • Then, using an 8-10 mm drill, we make holes in the plasterboard sheathing for future fasteners.
  • We change the drill to a drill with a victorious nozzle and drill a fastening hole in the main wall behind the plasterboard casing.
  • Insert long enough (10-15 cm) anchors made of hardened steel with a thickness of at least 8 mm into the nests made.
  • The metal anchor sleeve opens in the concrete wall, securing it securely. The most effective design is the Molly anchor, the sleeve of which, when opened, turns into a kind of "umbrella".

Advice!
The fastening reliability will increase if the anchors pass through one of the frame posts. You can find a rack under the plasterboard cladding using a magnet.

Almost any element can be safely attached to these anchors, since their strength allows them to withstand even a significant mass without deformation.

Note!
This technique is effective only if the gap between the base of the wall and the plasterboard sheathing does not exceed 50-60 mm.
Otherwise, deformation of the anchor is inevitable over time.

Using drywall plugs

Another technology that allows you to install cabinets on a gypsum plasterboard wall with your own hands involves the use of special dowels for drywall:

  • First, we drill a hole in the designated place, the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of the plastic sleeve of the dowel.
  • We insert a sleeve into the hole, after which we fix it with a locking screw.
  • When tightening the locking screw, the plastic parts of the sleeve open up, pressing against the inside of the plasterboard sheathing. Outside, the locking collar is responsible for fixing the fasteners.
  • You can see the appearance and principle of operation of such an element in the photo.

With all the seeming fragility of such a structure, it can withstand very significant loads, which means it can be used when installing a kitchen set.

Well, if the reliability seems insufficient to you, then each dresser can be additionally secured with a hanger attached to an anchor screwed into the ceiling. If you did not sheathe the ceiling, then the suspension can take on the bulk of the load.

Rail or rail mounting

The last method that I would like to mention is the installation of the headset elements on a special rail or mounting plate.

The installation instructions in this case look like this:

Lashing rail

Lashing rail

  • We apply a special rail for kitchen modules to the plasterboard wall or an ordinary wooden plank with a thickness of about 10 mm.
  • It is recommended to use the plasterboard dowels described above for fixing the planks. You can also use standard self-tapping screws for plasterboard, but then you need to screw them every 5-10 cm, evenly distributing the load.
  • After the base for the fasteners is installed on the wall, we hang the elements we need on it. In this case, a long rail or wooden plank protects the gypsum board from excessive loads at one point, therefore, even rather heavy furniture can be hung in this way.
