Regardless of family composition, lifestyle and place of residence, the kitchen is always the most frequently used space in the house. It should be comfortable, practical, cozy and beautiful.

Making it this way is a difficult task, but also very interesting. We will talk about how to equip a kitchen in a private house or apartment in this article.

There can be no general recommendations for planning and filling the kitchen, since the initial data in each case are different: the size of the room, the needs and culinary preferences of households, etc.

For example, in a private house, certain adjustments to our desires can be made by the lack of central water supply and sewerage or the presence of a hatch in the basement in the middle of the room.

Planning

Before you start thinking about how to properly equip the kitchen, analyze all the features of the room:

  • The shape and size of the kitchen;
Even a very small kitchen with a complex shape can be made convenient.

Even a very small kitchen with a complex shape can be made convenient.

  • Its location: isolated or combined;
  • The presence and condition of communications, including ventilation ducts, electrical wiring, the location of their output points.

Then decide what technique you need, what kind of dishes and in what quantity. After all, it is clear that a family of 4-5 people who loves to receive guests will need more than a childless married couple who are used to meeting friends in cafes and restaurants.

Council. Don't forget to list your special requests as well. Perhaps you have long dreamed of a bar and mini-bar or a wide windowsill on which you can arrange a greenhouse for growing greenery.

With the data obtained, you can begin to plan what and how to arrange, what where to place, and how it should look as a whole (read also the article on ergonomics of the kitchen).

Kitchen zoning

This is one of the most important steps in planning a space, regardless of whether the kitchen area is 40 or only 8 square meters.

  • In a studio apartment or a combined kitchen-living room, you can thoroughly isolate the cooking area from the rest of the space by installing a sliding partition, shelves or a bar counter. Another interesting trick is the podium arrangement.
Zoning with the "peninsula"

Zoning with the "peninsula"

  • If the room is medium-sized, but isolated, the dining area is allocated conditionally: different from the rest of the wall decor, different flooring, etc. But you can think about this later, but for now it is important to know where the table will stand, and where the kitchen headset.
  • In a very small kitchen, zoning is not always possible, since there is simply no way to place everything at once on 4 square meters. In this case, you will have to solve the problem with the removal of the dining area outside the kitchen, the device of a folding or pull-out table, or the use of the dining table as a working one.

Technics and equipment

Among the variety of kitchen appliances, there is one that you cannot do without. This is a stove, refrigerator, sink. After all, even if you cook very little, the food needs to be stored and cooked somewhere, and the dishes need to be washed.

The optional ones include such units as;

  • microwave,
  • Dishwasher,
  • waste shredder, etc.

You can do without them in the absence of space. Although someone will prefer to install the PMM instead of the oven, since they are used to cooking in a multicooker, and someone needs to squeeze a washing machine into the kitchen, since there is no place for it in the bathroom.

Let's try to give some tips on choosing and placing appliances in a small kitchen.

  • Try to provide space for the hood. If there is not enough space, it can be made built into a wall cabinet, with a pull-out filter, as in the photo.

  • If you bake often, it is better to place the oven not under the hob, but so that it is at the level of your chest - in a pencil case or a high module.
  • If baking is not your passion, you can do without an oven altogether, and use a slow cooker to bake meat and vegetables.
  • Built-in refrigerators, taking up as much space as conventional refrigerators, have a much smaller internal volume. Therefore, if there is a lack of space, it is better not to build in.

Note. Another disadvantage of the built-in refrigerator is the higher price. In addition, if it fails before you are going to change furniture, you will have to look for a new one with exactly the same parameters so that it "fits" into the module intended for it.

  • Instead of many separate kitchen units, look for multifunctional ones: a combine that serves as a meat grinder, juicer, vegetable cutter and blender, an oven with a microwave function, etc.

Having decided on the technique, think over the method of connecting it. It is better to place outlets for built-in equipment below the level of the table top so that they can be accessed from the cabinets, or 10 cm above the baseboard.

The dishwasher should be located close to the sink so that it can be connected to water and sewage without extending the hoses.

Placing sockets in the kitchen

Council. It is advisable to choose all the equipment in advance. It comes with instructions that will help you determine the right place for the sockets and take into account the real dimensions when ordering furniture.

Storage space

Knowing what equipment will be in the kitchen, you can already understand how much space is left for cabinets in which kitchen utensils, dishes, food should be stored, and whether it is enough for you. If not, you will have to either sacrifice some kind of device (for example, take the refrigerator out into the corridor), or look for another way out.

What can be done:

  • Hanging cabinets up to the ceiling. The upper shelves will store rarely used items. Otherwise, they will still take their place on the cabinets, only they will gather dust and spoil the view.
  • Shelves or cabinets on the wall above the dining table.
  • "Smart" filling for kitchen modules, which will allow you to use every centimeter of the inner space of the cabinets.

  • Roof rails. It's incredible how many things you need can fit on them without taking up space in drawers and shelves. But we have to admit that scoop spoons, hanging in plain sight, create a sense of disorder.
  • Baskets or drawers instead of plinths.
Even the narrowest slots can be used for storage by ordering or making special pull-out shelves with your own hands.

Council. Try to adhere to the working triangle rule when planning furniture and appliances. And keep in mind that after finishing, the dimensions of the room may change downward.

Finishing and design

We planned everything, decided, now we are equipping the kitchen. You need to decide what materials to use for decoration, what should be the lighting and colors, choose curtains.

Materials

So that cleaning the kitchen does not become a daily problem, and you do not have to rush to wipe every one that falls on the floor drop, materials should be chosen waterproof, abrasion resistant, do not absorb dyes, easily washable.

This does not mean that you have to limit yourself to tiles, plastic and metal; there are many modern materials that meet the listed requirements.

  • Waterproof laminate, porcelain stoneware, linoleum, quartz vinyl tiles can be laid on the floor. And even a parquet board or natural wood, but it needs to be treated with a special impregnation.
  • Moisture resistant paint or non-woven wallpaper for the kitchen - a great alternative to tiles on the walls.
  • The backsplash, especially near the sink and stove, is the dirtiest place in the kitchen. At the same time, the most noticeable. It can be tiled with a non-greasy epoxy grout. Can be covered with tempered glass - transparent or patterned. The most budgetary option is MDF panels. They are not as durable as glass and tiles, but replacing them after a while is not a problem.

  • Particular attention should be paid to kitchen fronts and countertops. Watch the video, explore other articles on our website to choose the option that suits you best. We advise you not to save on materials for their manufacture, so that in two or three years you do not have to think about buying a new kitchen.

Lighting

Even the smallest kitchen should have several types of lighting. At least two: general and work area lighting.

It is very inconvenient to cook when your own shadow from the chandelier located in the center of the ceiling falls on the desktop. As a backlight, you can use spotlights built into the ceiling or bottom of wall cabinets, or LED strips.

If the kitchen is 9 meters or more with a dedicated dining area, then it is advisable to provide a separate light source above the table. If it is small, one height-adjustable lamp is sufficient. If it is long enough, it is more convenient to hang several lamps in a row above the table.
