White gives the kitchen an extra clean feeling
The main criteria for a Scandinavian interior
If you want your kitchen to be not only cozy, but also practical and natural, Scandinavian décor is the perfect solution. It is good for rooms with even the smallest square footage and configuration.
Simple, strict lines are sure to suit adherents of a minimalist interior.
But before equipping one of the most popular places in the house, it is worthwhile to understand what features are inherent in the Northern European interior.
I can highlight several main features.
Scandinavian decor is a good solution for a small kitchen
- Firstly, it is a wall, floor or ceiling decoration that excludes any artificial materials. Natural wood or stone is what you need during the renovation process.
In a Scandinavian interior, you will not find plastic surfaces
- The ability to combine several types of finishes. By successfully combining wood flooring with stone or glass, you will get an unrivaled result.
The successful combination of wood and stone looks incredibly effective
- Everything is strict with the color scheme in the Scandinavian interior: it is best to use light neutral shades.
Scandinavian cuisine - 50 shades of white
- To slightly dilute the light background, you can use some bright accents. (the main thing is not to abuse them).
No one will forbid you to use small bright accents in the frame.
- A kitchen set must be multifunctional. Pretentiousness is not held in high esteem in the homeland of the Vikings.
Each element of the kitchen set must perform a specific function.
The main rules of framing
I described the main elements of Scandinavian decor. I think everything is very clear with them. But what is the best way to recreate the Scandinavian style in the interior of the kitchen and what elements should you pay special attention to?
This section is for those who want to learn more about the correct Scandinavian country style
Below I will dwell on each of them in more detail and try to describe in as much detail as possible all the nuances of creating a truly northern decor.
For flooring
Since the unspoken rule of repair work states that it is best to start altering a room with a floor covering, then I will start with it.
- The classic option for framing the floor in a Scandinavian kitchen is natural wood planks. But I understand that their price is far from affordable for everyone, so I recommend replacing them with more affordable counterparts imitating ash or oak boards.
If natural flooring is not affordable, you can use more affordable alternatives.
- The floor covering will have to go well with the shade of the walls, so I advise you to think this point in advance. It is not at all necessary to select similar shades, the contrasting version looks more than impressive.
The floor can be chosen as a harmonious addition to the furniture ...
... or as a contrast to it
- Popular materials for framing the floor are parquet or engineered boards. In addition to their excellent decorative properties, they are great for arranging underfloor heating (if you have thought about it).
Boards add a special charisma to the interior
- One of the most original options is considered to be the floor, lined with special tiles that imitate a wooden covering.
For walls and ceilings
Scandinavian country has its own rules for decorating the ceiling and walls. And in order to achieve the most organic interior, they should be strictly adhered to. Do not be afraid, this is not as scary as it might seem at first glance, besides, I will dwell on this issue in more detail.
- Snow-white or light cold shades are the undisputed leaders in the color scheme of the Scandinavian interior. This method of decoration will not only help to visually enlarge the area of the kitchen, but also give it a certain aura of purity.
The first thing that is associated with Scandinavian decor is the abundance of white
- Instead of natural wood for wall cladding, I recommend using the now popular lining appropriate shades. It is much cheaper than natural wood, but in terms of decorative qualities it is practically not inferior to it.
In Scandinavian cuisine, you are unlikely to find standard wallpaper
- For my taste, one of the most stylish design techniques in the process of arranging a kitchen with your own hands is a successful combination of wooden surfaces with a stone coating. For example, you can use a harmonious combination of a wooden countertop and a kitchen backsplash decorated with decorative stones in the work area.
Stone and wood textures work well together
- To achieve the maximum wow effect, use a structure of several ceiling beams, giving the interior texture.
Beams can add more originality to the decor
For windows
A Scandinavian-style kitchen design is unthinkable without good natural lighting. For the greatest authenticity, curtains should be abandoned, but I admit that this option is possible only in if you live on the upper floors, and there is no residential building opposite, and, accordingly, curious views.
A large amount of natural color is an important aspect of Scandinavian interiors
As for other aspects of the design of window openings, I can highlight the following:
- The color of the frames is best to match the color of the entire room.
- If it is impossible to refuse curtains, then instead of standard curtains or curtains, it is better to use light roman or roller blinds.
- Instead of plastic windows, it is better to choose wooden frames.
Instead of plastic windows, it is better to use wooden structures.
But what if you decorate the window openings not with banal curtains, but with mischievous figures?
In addition to natural lighting, it is worth thinking about artificial lighting. In the Scandinavian interior, it is represented by a variety of chandeliers, spotlights and floor lamps. Here you can walk around and pick up accessories of unusual shapes and colors!
"There are no many chandeliers!" - decided the Scandinavians
For headset
As I already said, the Scandinavian style of the kitchen is all about simplicity and grace of lines. Naturally, the headset should be appropriate. Restrained, if not austere design is an important element of such a decor.
The kitchen set must clearly fulfill its functions
In addition, you should not forget about the following nuances:
- All necessary household appliances for cooking should be at hand and make cooking as easy as possible.
- The ideal set for Scandinavian country - sleek facades in white tones. Countertops in dark shades are perfect as a contrasting element.
Facade lines should be perfectly straight and no frills
- Metal handles should be chosen for the headset.
- A large and massive wooden table, at which the whole family can comfortably sit, is the most important accessory for such an interior. For a small room, a rounded design is also quite suitable, which maximally lightens the space.
A Scandinavian-style kitchen-living room with a large table will allow the whole family to enjoy a delicious meal
How to add zest
So that the Scandinavian interior of your kitchen does not seem too strict, or worse, simply boring, you need to know how to decorate it skillfully. The instructions for filling a room with bright and unusual accessories are quite simple.
Just follow my recommendations and you will be pleasantly surprised by the end result.
It is the accessories that make the interior more personal.
An interesting canvas will make the interior more alive
- A beautiful, rich canvas on the kitchen wall will significantly decorate the interior and add liveliness to it. You can easily use not only dining-themed paintings, but also abstract bright canvases.
- Not uncommon in Scandinavian interiors and stencil ornaments on the walls. So why don't you learn from the Northern European experience? Decorate your kitchen walls with floral or floral designs in your favorite shades.
Floral ornament makes the atmosphere more sophisticated
- Original lamps of all possible shapes are another way to add originality to the decor. Hang them all over the kitchen, paying special attention to the dining and work areas.
It is thanks to small but memorable accessories that your kitchen can become a real example of style and good taste.
- A minimalistic yet stylish clock is what your kitchen was missing. They will add extra chic to the interior.
- And of course, don't forget about bright textiles! Cute pillows on chairs, a bright tablecloth or a small rug on the floor - all this will make the decor more individual.
Interesting pillows will help dilute the severity of the interior
On my own I will add that the use of a chalk board in the kitchen seems to me an incredibly interesting idea. The black color of the accessory will favorably set off the light headset, and you can write down reminders or pleasant wishes for your family on it.
Slate board is a real find for forgetful housewives
You can write anything on a slate board - even a menu for a week
In the end
The Scandinavian style succeeds in the impossible - to combine cold shades of framing with an incredibly warm atmosphere of the interior. In such a kitchen you will feel equally comfortable both in the heat of summer and in the winter cold.
Despite the lack of frills, Scandinavian cuisine can look stylish and not boring.
I hope that my tips and tricks will help you in the process of creating an unforgettable Scandinavian decor, as a bonus, I offer you a video in this article, which contains many additional relevant ideas. Would you like to design your kitchen in accordance with the main Scandinavian trends?
