The question of how to mount a hood in the kitchen is of concern to many today. Making repairs in the kitchen, people in most cases think about how to create a more efficient ventilation system, because it is not just convenient, but even necessary.

The person who prepares food regularly spends about five hours a day in the kitchen and breathes in harmful fumes, including fumes and fumes.

In addition, during cooking, the smallest particles and fats are released from food into the air, which also adversely affects human health.

The only way out in this situation is the purchase and installation of the hood, since neither traditional ventilation systems, nor simple ventilation will provide the desired effect. How to properly install the hood in the kitchen will be discussed in this article.

Hood selection

Ventilation is one of the most important systems in a human's dwelling that ensures the comfort of his life. In a sufficiently ventilated room, the air is clean and fresh, which is why it is simply pleasant to be here, in while stuffiness can cause negative reactions of the body, up to general weakness and dizziness.

Cooker hoods are one of the main ventilation units, since cooking is associated with high air temperatures and harmful emissions, including very unpleasant odors.

The main task of the hood is to clean the air in the room. And the cleaning process itself can take place in different ways. The fastening of the hood for the kitchen directly depends on this. So, there are two types of work of modern hoods.

Hood types

  1. The simplest exhaust device works on the principle of air recirculation. In this case, the air is not removed outside the room, but passes through special filters and returns back. Sometimes such hoods are also called filtering or suspended (see also the article on suspended hood for kitchen).
Hoods of various types. Below is a filtering one.

Naturally, there is no need to connect such a hood to the ventilation shaft. The only installation item is wall mounting.

The advantages of such mechanisms are their price, stylish design, low noise level and ease of installation. The disadvantages of this type of hoods include a relatively low efficiency, because during recirculation it is not enough to completely clean the room.

  1. The second type of hoods includes all those that remove air outside the room. In this case, it is necessary to bring the kitchen hood to the street or to a specially provided ventilation shaft (see also the article on cooker hood with air duct).

Such devices are mounted on the wall or directly on the ceiling above the slab. Ventilation pipes can be camouflaged using wall cabinets, which allows partially or even completely concealing their presence.

Such hoods require more serious installation work, but the instructions are not overly complicated.

What to look for when buying a cooker hood

If you have chosen the second type of device, then you need to consider the following factors when purchasing it:

  1. The valve and bellows must be the same size as the air vent in your kitchen.
  2. The engine power is checked as follows. If you bring a sheet of paper to the switched on hood, it should stick to the curtains.
  3. The dimensions of the hood should be no less than the surface of the plate, and preferably somewhat larger.
  4. The noise level should not exceed the permissible 40 decibels.
  5. Also consider the energy consumption of the hood.

Hood installation

Before connecting the hood in the kitchen, you must make sure of the following:

  • The corrugation should be as stretched as possible, since the folds will create vibrations and reduce the performance of the system.
  • As a result of installation, the corrugation should have a minimum of bends. Each 90 degree bend reduces system efficiency by 10%.
  • The distance between the cooker hood should be at least 70 cm.

You can read the manufacturer's instructions for more information on how high to hang the hood in the kitchen. By default, it is customary to place it at a distance of 70-80 cm from the surface of the slab.

The decision at what height to hang the hood in the kitchen also depends on the ratio of the size of the stove and the hood itself, since its surface must absorb all the steam and fumes.

Advice! If the ventilation shaft is clean and “pulls” well, then the valve can be removed from the hood and allowed to run with the engine off. This is possible in houses with controlled ventilation.

Hood connection to ventilation

Since it is not difficult to fix the hood in the kitchen, you can cope with this procedure yourself. But it's better to take an assistant.

  1. We apply the hood to the wall and mark its future position with a pencil. If you plan to change your kitchen furniture, you should consider integrating the hood into a hanging cabinet.
  2. We drill the walls under the dowel with a puncher. There is no need to cheat here, since the structure must be fixed “tightly”.

  1. We fasten the hood to the wall.
  1. Next, you should completely prepare the ventilation outlet by clearing it of construction debris.
  1. We put the corrugation on the valve and fix it with silicone sealant. The free end of the pipe should be run as deep as possible into the shaft. If no other repair work is planned in the kitchen, then the corrugation can be foamed with polyurethane foam.
  1. The last step is to put on an overlay that hides the corrugation. If it is attached to the wall, then you will have to drill a couple more holes.

On average, installation time takes 1 - 1.5 hours.

Hood service

  • Regardless of how expensive and high-quality hood you buy, in the process of its operation they can some very unpleasant nuances occur due to breakdowns or a decrease in the efficiency of the ventilation systems. Therefore, along with the question “how to put the hood in the kitchen” there is also the question of proper maintenance.
  • If you not only install the hood correctly, but also provide it with the necessary care, this will significantly extend the smooth operation of this device. The first rule in the care of ventilation mechanisms is the timely replacement of filter elements.
  • This is especially true for suspended hoods, which are filter hoods. In this case, the filter is the device's only weapon against polluted air, and therefore it must be changed regularly. In most cases, disposable acrylic grease traps are installed on the cheapest hoods, thanks to which the air is purified from fat and food particles.

  • The same filters are also installed in the hoods designed to remove air from the room through the ventilation shaft. However, we can also talk about reusable grease traps, which are washed and installed in place.
  • Changing the grease filter in time can protect you from fire. It's no secret that fat burns great. A large accumulation of grease on the filter can ignite the surface of the hood. Therefore, timely filter change is important in terms of compliance with safety regulations.
  • Before running the hood in the kitchen, stock up on several grease filters to prevent premature equipment failure.
  • In suspended hoods, carbon filters are also installed, which are directly responsible for air filtration. They can be collapsible (in this case, you can replace the carbon base) and non-collapsible (the filter is simply changed to a new one).
  • When buying carbon filters, beware of counterfeits. In this case, you can draw an analogy with printing equipment. So, there are both new printer cartridges and those that have been "refilled". Naturally, the latter option is cheaper, but the print quality in this case is noticeably lower.
  • The situation is the same in the carbon filter market. The so-called “regeneration of coal powder” is actively carried out here. Therefore, you should not purchase a charcoal filter that is too cheap, since it is highly likely that it is regenerated, which indicates the reuse of charcoal powder.

Conclusion

Since the hood is attached in the kitchen by means of simple "folk" methods, you do not have to invite a team of specialists to perform the installation. Anyone who knows how to hold a drill and a screwdriver in their hands can easily cope with this task.
