Mulberry growing problems

There are three main problems that you will have to face. All of them are solvable, although they require certain actions.

  1. Russian frosts. The mulberry tree loves a warm climate, so it is not very comfortable for it in the harsh Russian winters. However, an adult tree tolerates subzero temperatures quite calmly, but the seedlings will have to be insulated from frost. In addition, the tree is constantly developing fresh growth, so that its vitality and fertility compensate for this problem.

  2. Diverse trees. Yes, mulberries have male and female flowers, so you need at least two trees on your site. Otherwise, fruiting may not be expected.
  3. Sprawling crown. An adult mulberry tree has an extremely spreading crown, which requires a lot of space. Not every dacha near Moscow has enough territory for this plant.

Planting and leaving

It is best to plant a mulberry seedling. In this case, you should choose a three-year-old plant that has already yielded. This way you will know exactly the floor of the tree.

It should be planted in a bright and spacious place. The tree is not particularly demanding for soil fertility and can grow calmly even on sandy and scarce lands. Planting is carried out as standard, with digging holes and mandatory fertilization with humus or compost.

In the first years after planting, it is advisable to shelter and insulate the seedlings during freezing temperatures. This way you can be sure of the safety of your tree.

Mulberry loves watering very much, so at least ten full buckets should be poured under each adult tree once a week. In the autumn and spring periods, watering can be reduced, but it is important to monitor the soil moisture and not let it dry out.

But loosening the soil should be done with great care. Most of the roots are in close proximity to ground level and are very easy to damage.

Ripe mulberry fruits fall off by themselves. For collection, an awning or film is usually used, which is spread under the tree. The harvested berries can be used as raw materials for jam, compotes or jams. Bon Appetit!
