Removing a tree at a summer cottage: 5 reasons when you need to do it

  • Dec 27, 2020

Good afternoon, my reader. It's always a pity to chop down a tree. Especially if it has taken root in its growing corner so much that it seemed eternal. However, sometimes there are situations when it is impossible to do without removing it from the site. The reasons can be very different. The most common is his death. First, individual branches dry out, then part of the crown, the bark begins to peel off from the trunk. If this is a fruit plant, then the harvest becomes more modest with each season, and the fruits become smaller and lose their taste. In the end, the tree dries up completely, spoiling the general appearance of the garden and catching up with melancholy.

It happens that trees are cut for other reasons. For example, after acquiring a plot that was already in someone's use, the new owners decide to completely alter the structure of the garden, for which they completely remove all the old vegetation. Sometimes some trees are so neglected that they begin to pose a danger, since in any moment, especially in strong winds, can collapse, damaging buildings, cars or even causing injury people.

It happens that no one plants trees on the site. They grow from seeds accidentally placed on it. At first, no one pays attention to small shoots, then, when it begins to grow stronger, hands do not reach it. As a result, an absolutely useless adult tree (maple, poplar, oak) grows, which, moreover, interferes with the development of fruit plants. Of course, such trees can and should be cut down without regret, and their stumps can be mercilessly uprooted from the ground.

There are other reasons for the liquidation of a tree, for example, when it unnecessarily shades the space below, has reached maximum age, became useless as a result of inept pruning, simply dies due to the proximity of groundwater or freezing of roots.

1. Excessive shading

Often the crowns of trees are so dense that they hardly let in sunlight. If a house is located under them, then behind its windows, even in the midst of a sunny day, there is such a twilight that the residents are forced to turn on the lights in the rooms, as if evening had already come. There is no need to talk about growing garden crops in the shade of such crowns. Even an ordinary lawn will not take root in such a place.

2. Age

Over time, any tree reaches such a period of development when its trunk and crown die, although signs of some vital activity in the area of the root system are still preserved. There is no point in trying to revive him. It is easier to remove and plant a young seedling in this place.

3. Incorrect cropping

It can lead to excessive thickening of the crown. As a result, young growth by the end of the growing season does not have time to ripen before the required degree of winter hardiness is reached, and the branches may die.

4. High groundwater table

It can kill trees. And this applies not only to areas with excess moisture content in the soil, where it is not recommended to plant trees at all, but also to simply low-lying areas. The fact is that a young tree planted on them can develop stably, without deviations, until a certain stage. But as the root system grows, its roots go deeper, where they reach the water level and find themselves in conditions of lack of air. For this reason, the root system is no longer able to provide adequate nutrition for the entire aboveground part of the tree, and it gradually dies.

5. Freezing

It is primarily affected by the crown and roots of the tree. Moreover, the danger for him is not so much frost as sharp temperature changes. The degree of damage can vary. Sometimes the plant recovers safely after winter, especially if you help it (cut down dead branches, apply special medicinal decoctions), but it happens and dies.
