Why Soviet tanks can jump, but NATO tanks cannot

"And why don't tanks fly?" Some will ask themselves. At the same time, very many people have seen with their own eyes, or at least hear that domestically produced tanks are able to make long jumps and even make shots in flight. At the same time, NATO tanks do nothing of the kind. What is the point of all these actions, and are American and European tanks really unable to repeat the Russian trick?

What one does not have to hear and read on the endless expanses of the World Wide Web about tank jumps. They say that only domestic tanks can jump, and even more so to fire in a jump, and the cars of NATO countries in this matter are absolutely not like them. At the same time, supporters of domestic tank building like to point out that such jumps are possible due to the smaller mass, the presence rigid suspension and a dozen more "unique" features, most of which, of course, "never" are characteristic of foreign machines.

For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that domestic cars for the most part are really lighter than foreign ones. For example, the mass of the T-72 is about 45 tons, the mass of the T-80 is about 42-45 tons, the mass of the T-90 is 46 tons. The American "Abrams" weighs from 60 tons. The French Leclerc weighs 54 tons. Still, even 10-15 tons is not a fundamental difference. Moreover, Germany's main tank, the Leopard, weighs less than Russian tanks at all - 39 tons.

The important thing is that the ability to jump in itself does not depend on the mass of the tank as much as some believe. Basically, any tank can jump. In the same way, any car of this class in the world can fire on the move, even in a jump, even in flight, even in a somersault. Of course, the lighter the tank, the faster it will do it. However, there is no fundamental difference between the tanks of the former USSR and NATO tanks. Basically, these are very similar and quite comparable cars.

But why then do tanks jump? Is this an indication of quality or excellence? In short, it's like breaking bricks (and other similar items) by soldiers of special units from different countries - show-off and show-off. It looks beautiful and spectacular. Tanks jump (mostly) only for the camera or at various demonstration events. In general, such acrobatic stunts do not have the best effect on the state of any combat vehicle.
