At my dacha there is an impressive barrel filled with water. I think that in many areas there is the same capacity. Its benefits cannot be ignored, because it is convenient to water plants with water from a barrel, you can use water for household needs.
When cold days replace warm days, summer residents begin to prepare plots for wintering.
Naturally, at subzero temperatures, the water freezes. As a result, the barrels burst. I confess that I was just too lazy to drain such a volume of water. And in early spring, getting to our summer cottage is a huge problem. Nobody rakes the roads in SNT in winter.
But I didn't want to leave the barrel full either. After consulting with summer residents, reading information on the Internet, I managed to come across very effective methods.
Today I decided to tell you about these methods and, you never know, it will come in handy on the farm! How to prevent the barrel from exploding without draining the water from it?
Arm yourself with a plastic container
Why do barrels explode? After the water turns into ice, the pressure on the walls and bottom of the tank increases significantly. As a result, she may simply not stand it. In the best case, cracks will appear, in the worst case, the barrel will burst. Fortunately, this situation can be avoided. It is necessary to make sure that the center of pressure is in a different place.
Plastic containers are ideal for these purposes. We take a bottle, tie a small load to the bottom. We need to make the top of the container look out of the water, and the bottom is in the water.
We put sand into the barrel. The amount should be such that it evenly covers the bottom of the container. Instead of sand, you can take all the same plastic bottles, having previously filled them with water. These actions will help to shift the center of gravity.
Water turned into ice will press on sand or bottles. As a result, the barrel will not explode.
Stick - an alternative to bottles
There is one more method, it is simpler and less energy consuming. You just need to find a timber of the right size. Surely, in the country there are unnecessary logs, handles from a shovel, a hoe, a rake, etc. You need to put the stick in the barrel at an angle so that it protrudes from the water by at least 20 centimeters.
When the water begins to freeze, the ice "creeps" along the timber, reducing the pressure on the walls of the container.
