Trampling snow under the trees
Many believe that tamping snow in the near-trunk circle in the spring is simply necessary: this will protect the tree from early awakening and freezing, and will serve as prevention of attacks from mice and rats.
But in reality, the compacted snow turns into a hard crust that does not melt for a long time and causes harm to the tree. This leads to the fact that the crown wakes up earlier than the roots, they cannot give the necessary energy to the aboveground part of the plant. In the worst case, due to a dense layer of snow, the tree dies; stone fruits suffer most from such an error.
Whitewashing trees
This procedure, according to some gardeners, protects the plant from pests and performs an aesthetic function. We can agree with the second argument, but the first is erroneous, since a layer of paint will not interfere with insects.
Covering tree trunks with white paint or diluted chalk is a guarantor of protection of the bark from the sun's rays reflecting from the snow and burning the bark of the plant. This event is necessary for trees in late autumn or winter, if it is not carried out before March, it is better not to whiten the trunks at all. In the spring, such a procedure will be useless.
Premature cleaning of shelters
Often, after a thaw, frosts occur, which can destroy plants unprotected from the cold. Therefore, do not rush to remove the covering material from delicate plants: roses, grapes, clematis and others. In the middle lane, frosts can rage until the end of May. The main thing is not to trust the thaw, otherwise there is a risk of losing plants that endured the winter, but died in the spring due to recurrent frosts.
Early treatment of the garden from insects
The best time for such a treatment of the site is the formation of buds on the trees until the moment when they bloom. A common mistake is spraying plants even at sub-zero temperatures.
Firstly, such treatment will not be effective: insects wait out the cold in the ground, and the poison will not affect them. Secondly, water is the basis of any solution against pests, and if it remains on the bark, the droplets will expand and destroy the integrity of the trunk. This process will make the plants prone to infections.
Some gardeners rub the trunks with lard in the hope that such a procedure will scare away hares. In no case should this be done: such a manipulation will only attract animals that have starved over the winter.
Burning grass
For such a way of getting rid of waste, gardeners can be fined, burning grass can lead to a large-scale fire, at least there is a risk of ruining relations with neighbors. But, despite these consequences, many gardeners resort to this method.
In the fire, not only harmful insects die, but also useful ones, the top layer of the soil heats up, which significantly impairs its fertility. Unless turnips will grow well in a fire.
You shouldn't waste precious time on the activities mentioned above. This way, you will not harm the plants and save time for more important things in the garden in the spring.
