Good afternoon, my reader. When pruning branches, it is worth remembering the basic principle, which can be characterized by the well-known proverb: "Measure seven times, cut once." Before removing any shoot, you need to know how to cut it and why. If the plant is cut incorrectly, then you can destroy it.

Anti-aging pruning
This method is suitable for those plants that were not pruned last season, and will also save the tree if pruned incorrectly. In fact, this is the replacement of old branches with new ones. With the help of anti-aging technology, you can restore not only the decorative appearance of the plant, but also its natural strength, and in this way:
- Prune old, diseased and poorly developed branches.
- Shorten young shoots by a third.
- Subsequently, periodically thin out the crown.
Note. The best time for this procedure is early March or June - July.
Rejuvenation of fruit branches
For fruit trees to produce a good harvest, their shoots must be at least two years old. But the older the branches become, the more they begin to tilt downward and each time they bear less fruit. Therefore, in order for the tree to continue to bear fruit, such branches must be removed. In this case, the lateral branching technique can be used.
Transfer to lateral branch
This pruning technique is used to change the direction of branch growth. This promotes the speedy change of leaf shoots into fruit ones, even acceleration of fruit development is noted. To achieve this, you need to find the branch that is located the most successfully, and cut off part of the growth above it. As a result, the crown is adjusted so that the branches do not interfere with each other, and enough light rays pass to the fruits.
Stump trimming
This technique is based on anti-aging pruning. Only it is carried out in a more radical way. That is, in plants, all branches are cut off and only a stump remains.
This type of pruning is well suited for plants that quickly develop new shoots. For example, it is willow, hazelnut or white turf. To make them more attractive, you need to prune them annually.
Trim to ring
This technique is best if the branch is broken, withered, no longer bearing fruit, or is weakened and should be removed immediately. It is carried out in several steps:
- Attach the garden pruner parallel to the trunk to the base of the branch, that is, the so-called ring.
- Cut off a branch.
- Clean the cut with a sharp knife. Before that, it is recommended to disinfect it.
- Treat the "wound" with an antiseptic and cover with garden putty.
Pruning tops
Note. Tops are young shoots growing vertically. Very often they appear in places of cuts after heavy pruning.
They slow down the growth of the main side branches and reduce the fertility of the tree. Tops thicken the crown, which can negatively affect the plant. Therefore, you need to trim them regularly. This is best done at the end of February, and the ring trimming technique is usually used. But you can break the tops and at the beginning of June, when they become stiff.
Pruning for external bud
With this technique, the entire branch is not cut off, but simply shortened. This helps to thin the crown and also activates the growth of the lateral shoots of the plant. The branch is cut over the bud facing outward from the crown, thus:
- Depart from the kidney approximately 3-5 mm.
- Position the garden pruner at an angle of approximately 30 degrees.
- Cut off a branch.
Note. To avoid contamination inside the plant, a stump of more than 5 mm should not be left. In addition, the bud can dry out if the cut is too low.
