Whitewashing is not just an aesthetic function, but protects trees from damage during the off-season. A layer of paint protects trees from sunburn and frost, because the bark is damaged as a result of sudden changes in temperature. When the trunk heats up during the day and water gets into cracks in the bark, in the evening the trunk freezes and its bark gradually collapses. This usually happens between the twenties of February and the beginning of March.

Thanks to paint or lime solution, the bark will repel ultraviolet light, heat up less, so moisture will not get into the cracks. To prevent trees from getting injured in winter, they need to be whitened in October-November, when the foliage has already fallen, but frost has not yet come.

In order for whitewashing to give good results, the tree trunk must be pre-prepared. The first thing to do is to remove moss and lichens from the bark. A hard brush is suitable for this purpose, as it will help to effectively sand all problem areas of the bark. Then the tree is treated with preparations against the fungus, 2-3 days pass, and only then the tree can be whitewashed.

It is undesirable to clean the bark of trees in the spring, since due to injury, the tree will give a meager harvest, moreover, such bark will become a free environment for parasites and bacteria. If the tree was not whitewashed in the fall, then it is necessary to paint it again no earlier than from mid-February at a temperature above +5 degrees. If you did not manage to whitewash the trees in time, then it is better not to do this at all, otherwise it is too late the whitewash will get on the leaves, buds, buds, and this will weaken the harvest and will not give the trees full value develop.

If you started working with plants at the end of winter, but the weather is too cold to whitewash the plants, then it is better to protect them from frost with burlap, spunbond, paper or newspapers.
