2 ways to measure the width of a river without swimming along it

In what situations life does not put a person. You never know what might come in handy tomorrow morning! Perhaps one day you will even need the ability to measure the width of the river. Fortunately, this can be done without special equipment and without even crossing the water barrier. There are two ways proven over the years, however, to implement them you will have to work hard with convolutions. The width of any river is calculated by the properties of triangles from the school geometry course. Unexpected, right?

Method one

First, we select the two most noticeable points on the banks "A" and "B", after which we put a peg at point "C", which should lie with points "A" and "B" in one straight line at any distance from the coast. From the peg we make 10 steps to the next point "O" so that our movement draws a line segment "AC" perpendicular to it. We put in place "O" one more peg.

We continue walking along the straight line for two more steps and put the peg "D", take several steps to the side of the straight line so as to obtain the segment “DE” at a right angle relative to the segment “SD”. After that, connect the points "E" and "A" with a line. If everything was done correctly, then the segment will pass through the point "O", and we will get two similar triangles "ACO" and "ODE" with the aspect ratio of 1 to 5.

Thus, the segment "AC" will be equal to 5 segments "DE". And since we know the distance from point "B" to point "C", we can subtract the width of the river from the segments.

The calculation error will be 1-3 meters.

Method two

First of all, you need to "conjure" three sharp objects (for example, three pins or a nail) and some kind of flat base - best of all, a plate. From three carnations, we build a right-angled isosceles triangle on the base, after which we will need to choose the two most recognizable objects on the two banks of the river.

The device we have made must be aligned with the selected objects along the line of sight. Thus, we get two segments "AB" and "BS", where the first is the width of our river. To do this, you first need to fix the made device on the ground so as not to disturb the created composition. We draw the beam along the leg of the small triangle "SD", after which we remove our device by placing a peg in its place.

You should get two perpendicular segments "AC" and "SD". Further on the segment "SD" you need to use our device to select a point "E", being at which points "A" and points "C" will coincide with the studs on the measuring device.

As a result, we get an isosceles right-angled triangle "ACE" with angles of 90 and 45 degrees. By measuring the segment "CE" we get the distance "AC". It remains only to subtract from it the segment "BC" already known to us.
