How to properly fertilize apple trees in the garden

To solve the problem of fruit falling and prevent its occurrence in the future, apple trees should be properly fertilized. It is important not only to choose the right nutritional formula, but to add it in the right dosage on time. Only properly carried out top dressing will give the desired result: it will support the health of the garden culture, ensure its abundant fruiting.

During the spring-autumn period, experienced gardeners recommend feeding the apple trees 4 times. In the winter months, dormant fruit trees do not need fertilization.

When feeding is carried out

It is customary to carry out the first feeding of apple trees in April (second decade of the month). At this time, buds are already beginning to bloom on the trees.

The second fertilization will need to be applied at the beginning of the flowering period.

For the third time, the gardener should feed the apple trees at the stage when the fruits ripen on the tree.

Summer residents carry out the last feeding after the crop is harvested. It is aimed at laying as many buds as possible, from which foliage and flower stalks will appear after the onset of springtime.

How to feed an apple tree

It is most convenient to use a purchased mineral mixture to provide a fruit tree with all the nutrients it needs. For fertilizing apple trees, the use of complex compounds rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is shown.

Nitrogen is necessary for the tree to grow green deciduous mass. However, this nutritional element cannot be used in large quantities, especially after the apple tree has faded. Otherwise, there is a risk of getting a lush crown, but at the same time not seeing a good harvest of fruits. At the stage when the apples are ripe, the tree again needs nitrogen.

Thanks to phosphorus, the root system is strengthened, the appearance of peduncles and the formation of ovaries is accelerated.

It is necessary to feed the garden crop with potassium in order to accelerate the ripening of the crop. The tree especially needs this nutritional element at the stage when the apples are just beginning to ripen.

The use of phosphorus-potassium mixtures for apple trees is shown at the stage of plant flowering and in autumn.

How to fertilize correctly

Experienced gardeners do not practice the introduction of nutrient mixtures directly under the root of a fruit tree. Apple trees should be fed differently. Around the trunk, it is required to make a circle with a diameter of 0.6-0.7 cm. The marked area (from the circumference to the outline of the crown) is first loosened, and then fertilizer is applied.

How is feeding

For the first spring feeding, organic matter, in particular humus, is suitable. The use of fresh cow dung is undesirable.

Around the trunk of the apple tree, it is required to scatter 50 kg of organic fertilizer, and then embed it in the soil.

You can also add urea. Consumption rate is 0.5 kg per 1 tree.

For the second feeding, use a liquid mixture. It is prepared from the following ingredients:

  • urea - 150 g (or chicken droppings - 1.5 kg);
  • superphosphate - 250 g;
  • potash fertilizer - 200 g;
  • water - 50 l.
First, the apple tree needs to be watered abundantly, and then fertilized with the resulting nutrient fluid (50 liters per 1 tree).

The third feeding is carried out using a different composition. To obtain it, take the following components:

  • powdered sodium - 3 g;
  • rain or settled water - 30 liters;
  • nitrophosphate - 130 g.

The resulting liquid is poured over the apple tree. Consumption - 30 liters per plant.

In the autumn (before frost at night), the fruit crop is fed for the last time. To obtain a nutrient mixture, take:

  • potash fertilizer - 300 g;
  • phosphorus compounds - 300 g;
  • rainwater - 40 liters.
The area of the trunk circle is watered with a liquid fertilizer. If the autumn is rainy, you do not need to dissolve dry fertilizers in water. They are simply sprinkled on the soil under the apple tree.
