Why are so elongated towers installed on NATO tanks?

Everyone has seen NATO tanks in feature films and news reports. A characteristic feature of almost all Western combat vehicles of this class is an atypically long, elongated tank turret. Why does she have such a shape? Obviously, the smaller the tank, the better. What made the designers go for such a technical solution?

Everything is extremely simple. The towers of American tanks, unlike the Soviet "trash", have their own shower room, bedroom, kitchen, bar counter and coffee maker. And all this is located in the same "elongated" part. A joke, of course. Of all of the above, only coffee makers were seen in American tanks, and that is, serious grounds for recognizing such photographs as "unpretentious army humor" of tank US crews.

In fact, the ammunition load is located at the rear of the turret of the combat vehicle. In fairness, it should be noted that American tanks, for example, the well-known Abrams, are really more spacious than ours. However, in the weather for the ergonomics and comfort of the crew, the designers had to significantly increase the dimensions of the car. The ammunition compartment had to be included in the general concept of the extended design.

It is noteworthy that the ammunition load of the Soviet T-72 and the comparable American M1A2 differ slightly. So, in a Soviet tank, the stock is designed to complete the gun with 39 shots. The American tank has 40 or 42 rounds, depending on the modification of the gun used. The calibers of the guns of the two vehicles are also quite comparable. Domestic 72-ka is equipped with a 125-mm cannon. The overseas M1A2 is armed (at the moment) with a 120-mm gun.
