Cabbage, like most vegetable crops, needs constant lighting. They plant it in a sunny place where there are no shaded areas.
The soil is made fertile, moderately loose. Pay attention to what kind of culture grew there earlier. The best precursors for cabbage are legumes, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, melons, turnips.
Early varieties are planted in late April - early May, medium 10-20 May, late - in late spring.
Row spacing:
- in the early 45-50 cm;
- middle and late 60-70 cm.
Plant Spacing:
- early varieties - 30 cm;
- medium - 45-50 cm;
- late - 50-70 cm.
The holes are made deep so that the stem is completely buried in the ground up to 1 leaf. Sprinkle with warm water, not less than 0.5 liters for each. After planting, they are watered again, when the water is absorbed, the bushes are sprinkled with dry soil.
Landings are insulated with a film or covering material. The temperature inside will rise by + 2-5 ° C, which will shorten the maturation of cabbage by 10-12 days. The first 1-2 months can be used for planting lettuce, spinach and other green crops with a short growing period.
If you plan to cultivate late cabbage, you can sow it directly into the ground. This will save time and effort in growing other seedlings. Sowing:
- grooves are made in the garden, 3-4 seeds are placed in each at a distance of 6-7 cm;
- after the growth of 1-2 true leaves, the cabbage is thinned out, 1-2 of the strongest are left;
- the weak and elongated are thrown away.
For stimulation, the seeds are soaked in growth activators (Fitosporin, Zircon, Albit).
Regular watering is the basis of care, since cabbage is very demanding on moisture throughout almost the entire growth period. A short-term drought is already damaging the roots. A constant supply of moisture ensures the normal formation of foliage, affects the juiciness of the head. During the period of its formation for 1 plant, the minimum dose is a bucket of water.
A month before cutting the head of cabbage, watering is reduced or stopped altogether. Excess moisture is no longer absorbed, and the roots are at risk of infection with rot.
Protection from butterflies
The quality of the heads of cabbage can be reduced by the cabbage butterfly. There are 2 ways to destroy it:
- Spraying with onion tincture. Use green arrows and bottom leaves. They are cut into small pieces, filled with cold water and left overnight. The infusion is filtered and the cabbage is sprayed so that it gets on all sides and inside the leaves. Repeat 3 times a week. For a tangible effect, it will take 4-5 years of treatments.
- For a single spraying, an infusion of cayenne pepper (100 g per 1 liter of water) is suitable.
Prevention in the fight against pests is always needed, it begins from the moment the seedlings are planted.
