Good afternoon, my reader. There are several rules for pruning geraniums. They describe the process in detail and indicate the timing of the procedure. Most often, this manipulation is carried out in March or October-November. There are also two ways to grow a plant: in a free state or as a standard crop.

Basic rules for pruning geraniums

First of all, you need to determine whether an annual or perennial flower variety grows on the site. For the former, it is not necessary to carry out this procedure. It is used only for crown formation. But perennial shrubs must be cut twice a year: in spring and autumn. In this case, the procedure promotes the formation of a large number of buds and peduncles, as well as ensures long and abundant flowering.

Important. Pruning too much can kill the plant.

When pruning a plant, you need to pay attention to the variety. There are bushes with a low and thick main stem, some grow on the sides, in others growth in height is laid, there are varieties with a fairly long stem and branches directed downward. Despite such a variety, it is impossible to radically change the shape of the crown.

Spring pruning

The procedure is carried out in the first decade of March. It helps the plant to form a large number of shoots and build lush greenery. But in this case, geraniums will bloom much later.

It is necessary to pay attention to the size of the geranium and its age. If you intensively prune branches on an adult bush, then it will take a long time to recover and may not have time to bloom. On young plants, you can carry out cosmetic pruning and form a bush at your discretion.

Autumn pruning

Geranium blooms in summer, therefore, with the onset of autumn, it begins to prepare for hibernation. You can help the plant by pruning. When the last buds will dry up and foliage will turn yellow, you can start the procedure. Dry inflorescences and wilted branches must be completely removed.

All yellow leaves should be removed so that the bush does not waste energy on their restoration. Healthy shoots are also cut off, leaving branches 5-10 centimeters high. The procedure helps the plant to form buds for new shoots and flowers that will bloom in spring.

Important. If the operation was not carried out in the fall, in no case should the bushes be cut in the winter. From the beginning of December to the end of February, the plants are weakened.

Before carrying out the manipulation, it is necessary to disinfect the instruments and prepare the crushed activated carbon. Slices are sprinkled with this powder. If necessary, it can be replaced with wood ash.

Formation of a standard plant from a geranium bush

To grow a standard flower, you need to turn a lush shrub into a slender tree. In this case, the inflorescences do not bloom along the entire length of the plant, but only at the top of the crown. This geranium looks original and beautiful. It is often used in landscape design.

You must first cut off all the side shoots of the bush and leave only the main stem - it is attached to the support. When the geranium grows to one meter, pinching should be done on the main trunk after the first branch, and on the side ones - after the fourth. It will take a long time to wait for the appearance of inflorescences on such a tree.

With the help of the rules described above, any gardener can learn to care for the crown of a geranium and grow the most beautiful and dense bush in his garden.
