Plants that prefer partial shade

These are flowers that grow both in well-lit areas and in diffused shade.

Astilba

Prefers places in diffused shade with nutritious soil. Perennial, reaching a height of 85 cm with inflorescences in the form of bright, long panicles. The advantage of astilba is its long flowering - until late autumn.

Drought tolerant.

Before planting a perennial, organic matter is introduced into the soil (3 kg per 1 m 2).

Pansies

Compact perennials 20 cm high. They are appreciated by gardeners for their spectacular, spreading flowers of blue, red, yellow, purple colors. They feel good in partial shade, but they require care throughout the season: abundant watering, timely fertilization, and removal of dried buds.

Phlox

There are annual and perennial varieties. The flower beds are decorated with low-growing plants, up to 55 cm high, and tall plants up to 95 cm. Phloxes are distinguished by lush, abundant flowering. They form inflorescences from bells with a diameter of 11 cm. Pointed and rounded petals are found.

The color palette is very wide. The most common colors are considered: pink, blue, white, fuchsia.

Phloxes are planted as an independent group, and they create compositions with other shade-loving plants.

Hosta

There are a lot of hosta varieties, but for cultivation in partial shade, they prefer options with plain leaves. They are less demanding on lighting.

Plant care is not laborious. It tolerates both frost and drought. Grows quickly and is used as a background shrub. Perennials are planted separately, used to form borders, in compositions with other flowers.

The hosta has large leaves, slightly pointed at the ends. They differ in color and texture: matte, with wrinkles, smooth, shiny, with strokes, stripes, etc.

The height of the bush is from 55 cm to 1.2 m.

Flowers growing in dense shade

Some shade-tolerant plants also thrive in dense shade.

Lungwort

Ground cover perennial. It grows very densely, so it is divided every three years. Bushes reach a height of 45 cm. Sprawling. There are varieties with completely green leaf plates, spots or streaks.

Primrose. Inflorescences are small blue, purple, pink, red. After they have faded, the leaves come to the fore.

The plant is unpretentious to care for. It has a high immunity to fungal diseases.

Lungwort is used in compositions with hosta, fern, hellebore and crested. Planted near shrubs.

Primrose

Perennials decorate the edges of the flower bed, the trunks of trees and shrubs. There are a large number of varieties and hybrids. Primrose forms small neat bushes 20 cm high. It begins to bloom from the first half of April to mid-May.

Inflorescences of various forms: multi-tiered, spherical, pyramidal. The color palette is also different: white, blue, pink flowers.

Primrose propagates by dividing the bush.

Rogersia

Tall shrub (up to 1.5 m), which is used to decorate the territory near outbuildings or near a solid fence. The shape of the leaf blades in some varieties resembles a chestnut. The leaves are large, on elongated cuttings. Peduncles are high, in the form of a panicle, cream-colored. Blooms in July.

In the flower beds, Rogers dominates, attracting special attention. They are used both in solo plantings and in combination with hosta, ferns, astilbe.

Many shade-tolerant plants are as beautiful as those growing in the sun. They allow you to create spectacular combinations both in diffused shadows and in dense ones.
