The tradition of sewing on buttons in men's clothes on the right lapel, and buttons of women's clothes on the left lapel appeared somewhere in the XIV century. We owe the emergence of this fashion to the medieval wardrobe. The thing is that noble beautiful ladies have never dressed themselves in a formal dress. In this difficult question, they were helped by the maids.
With the beginning of the New Age, the dress only became more complicated. Corsets, elaborate dresses, bustles and much more appeared. All this was fastened and tied up not without the help of a servant. In order to make it more convenient for the maids to serve their masters, the tailors began to sew on buttons not on the right, but on the left. Thus, the "classic" arrangement of buttons was banally inconvenient.

There is another, less popular and more commonplace version. Allegedly, men's and women's clothing became more and more similar, and at some point, buttons began to be sewn on different sides precisely in order not to confuse items of clothing for different genders. However, this version does not explain in any way the arrangement of buttons on medieval dresses, and therefore does not stand up to the slightest criticism.
