What are ground cover plants for?
After active weed control, empty areas remain. Weed seeds fall on them, and everything starts anew. The ground in such places dries quickly, and after rain, dirt forms.
To prevent this from happening, ground cover grasses are planted. For example, wild and perennial. They are not demanding on growing conditions and are unpretentious in care. They grow quickly, densely cover bare areas of land with green mass, preventing weeds from germinating. Protect soil from erosion and excessive moisture loss. They are able to regulate the microclimate.
Decoration of garden paths
Garden paths are most often made from materials such as:
- gravel;
- crushed stone;
- tile;
- thick layer of sand.
Weed seeds fall into the smallest cracks, it germinates, and the path loses its aesthetic appearance. To prevent this from happening, ground cover plants are planted around the edges.
Most often these are:
- Creeping tenacious. The owner of bright cherry-colored leaves, with which blue small flowers effectively contrast.
- Semi-shrub herb carnation. There are many species of this plant. Terry and non-double, spectacular flowers of various colors and shades will adorn any area. Clove has a rich, vibrant scent that fills the air in the evening. Differs in the duration of flowering and unpretentious care.
- Kotula. Also known as cistus. A plant reaching a height of 25 cm. Loved by gardeners for their leaves of an interesting shape, reminiscent of a fern. They are bright green in summer. In the fall, they seem to light up, acquiring a purple or bronze hue. The flowers are large, yellow. Prefers sunny places, sometimes shade.
- Sedum creeping, or carpet sedum. The owner of dense, fleshy leaves. There are shades of yellow, gray-gray and emerald.
The space between the tiles is also covered with ground cover plants. They give preference to those who reach a height of no more than 4 cm.
For instance:
- Thyme. Spicy ground cover grass. Grows in open, sunny areas. Unpretentious in care and resistant to weather fluctuations.
- Muhlenbeckia. In summer, its small leaves of a bright green hue, in autumn they turn bronze. There are evergreen varieties.
- The cat is bristly. It harmonizes with stone paths, looks spectacular in the cracks between the tiles. Perennial is often used in landscape design for the decoration of alpine slides and artificial reservoirs. The plant reaches a height of only 7 cm. Creates a voluminous carpet with sharply defined foliage. Inflorescences are pale yellow or white.
Ground cover plants for flower beds
Free spaces in flower beds, flower beds and tree trunks or shrubs are also covered with ground cover plants.
The following are used:
- Waldsteinium trifoliate. Reaches a height of 20 cm. A perennial plant that forms fluffy, voluminous rugs, covered with lemon-yellow flowers in summer.
- Veronica is threadlike. Creeping plant 6 cm high. It has green, light rounded leaves. In April, pale blue flowers with dark veins appear. Flowering is short - only 2 months. In a flower bed, Veronica is used as an addition to tulips or irises. It is unpretentious - it grows both in the shade and in the sun.
- Duchenei is Indian. Outwardly, it resembles garden strawberries and even has fruits, but they are inedible. Looks harmoniously in a composition with low grasses. Often the ducheneu is planted to close the trunk circles.
- Starfish is lanceolate. Ground cover, creeping plant 15 cm high. With narrow long dark green leaves and delicate, fragile white flowers. Used as lawn grass, to decorate rock gardens, tree trunks.
There are a large number of ground cover plants for every taste. With their help, they simplify the care of flower beds and the site as a whole. They look laconic both in flower beds and on the trunks of trees and shrubs.
