How to get compost in just 3 months

  • Mar 15, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. The most popular organic fertilizer for garden and garden plants is compost. Thanks to such top dressing, the structure of the soil improves (it becomes lighter and looser), the content of nutrients in it increases. Making compost with your own hands is available to every summer resident.

Advantages and disadvantages of bagged compost

One of the advantages of this fertilizer is its availability. The gardener will not have to spend money to buy it.

You can make compost with your own hands without financial investments from plant and food waste. For this purpose, the following are applicable:

  • vegetable tops (with the exception of potato and tomato);
  • mowed grass and weeds weeded out;
  • cleaning remaining after cooking;
  • broken or sawn tree branches.

To obtain fertilizer, all this waste, combined with each other in a compost pit or heap, needs to rot within 1-2 years. However, there is also a faster method of obtaining compost - in bags. In this case, the process of "maturation" of the compost takes 2-3 months.

In the list of advantages of this method of obtaining fertilizer, one can see the saving of time and space (the bags are more compact in compared to the compost pit), labor costs (the summer resident does not need to stir the contents of the heap with a pitchfork so that the waste rotted evenly). The compost maturing in bags is not washed away by rain, as is the case with a compost heap. It is free of parasites and weeds.

The only minor disadvantage of this organic feeding method is the need to spend money on purchasing the right amount of suitable bags.

Method for making compost in a bag

To obtain this organic fertilizer in just a few months, the gardener will need to buy suitable bags. They must meet the following requirements:

  • be made of thin but durable polyethylene (the thinner the package, the better it will warm up under the sun, and therefore rot its contents);
  • be distinguished by a large volume (from 120 to 250 liters);
  • the polyethylene from which the package is made should not deform, stretch, tear;
  • preferably compost in a dark bag.

You should not use a garbage bag to obtain fertilizer. It is not strong enough. The ideal option is bags for construction waste.

In the process of placing plant residues in a bag, the summer resident must monitor that there are no plants with signs of diseases among them. Contaminated compost material is not applicable. Otherwise, there is a risk of spreading the infection throughout the summer cottage along with the infected fertilizer.

To obtain better compost, a little bird droppings or rotted manure can be added to the plant and food waste in the bag. It is also advisable to enrich the contents of the bag with wood ash. The additive will help accelerate the "ripening" of feeding.

The use of synthetic materials for compost production is excluded.

After filling the bags, you will need to slightly moisten the inside of the waste. This will have a positive effect on the rate of their decay.

The contents of the bag will need to be tamped well. The bag should be tightly packed with plant matter to the top. After which it is tied. For this purpose, use scotch tape or electrical tape. The bag must be tightly closed. It is impossible for air to penetrate into it from the outside.

The filled bags are left in a warm, well-lit place. After a few months, the compost will be ready. It can be used immediately in the garden and in the vegetable garden.

It is applicable for the following purposes:

  • fertilization of beds with garden crops growing on them;
  • mulching the tree trunk circle;
  • soil enrichment with nutrients for growing seedlings.
Compost is an excellent top dressing for both indoor flowers and greenhouse crops.
