The use of baking soda at the summer cottage: feeding, protection from diseases and insects

  • Mar 26, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Ordinary baking soda (sodium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate) is used not only in everyday life, but also in the garden. This budgetary tool may well replace aggressive chemicals (fungicides, insecticides). They can be used to feed and heal plants, and can also be used for pest control.

Baking soda for fungal plant diseases

Dangerous fungal infections: late blight, powdery mildew, gray rot - can be cured with just two or three treatments of plants using sodium bicarbonate. For this soda (4 tbsp. l.) and liquid soap (2 tbsp. l.) is dissolved in 10 liters of water. The finished composition is used for the treatment of melons infected with powdery mildew (cucumber, melon, zucchini, pumpkin), as well as for prophylaxis.

To get rid of late blight on tomatoes and gray rot on grapes, a different composition is prepared. Baking soda (3 tablespoons) l.) is dissolved in a bucket of water, liquid soap is added there (2 tbsp. l.). This agent is sprayed on diseased plants 3 times, maintaining the interval between procedures for 7-10 days. For prevention, tomatoes and grapes are treated once a month.

Soda solution is also used for watering garden crops. Such treatment destroys the spores of the fungus that lives in the upper layers of the soil and contributes to the rotting of the root system.

Fight against harmful insects

A solution of sodium bicarbonate is an effective means of protection against certain pests (caterpillars, slugs, wireworms, weevils, aphids). Moreover, it can be used to treat plants during any growing season (even during fruiting).

For the destruction of moth caterpillars on fruit trees, sodium bicarbonate (5 tbsp. l.) and liquid soap (2 tbsp. l.) is dissolved in 10 liters of water. The resulting composition is used to treat the crown of affected trees. The procedure is repeated at intervals of several days until the insects die.

Cabbage caterpillars are also killed with soda. To do this, the leaves of the plant are sprinkled with dry sodium bicarbonate in the morning or evening, when there is dew. Thanks to this, the budgetary tool will stay on the plant much longer.

Similar tactics are used to combat garden ants, slugs, wireworms. Places of accumulation of insects are abundantly sprinkled with sodium bicarbonate. And to get rid of aphids, plants are sprayed with a solution of soda (2 tbsp. l.) and water (10 l).

Top dressing from sodium bicarbonate

It is not recommended to feed tomato bushes with ovaries with mineral fertilizers, so as not to spoil the taste of ripening fruits. However, this caution does not apply to foliar fertilization with baking soda.

Tomato tops are sprayed with a weak solution (0.5%). And for irrigation, a concentration of 3.5% is used. Such dressing not only does not spoil the taste of tomatoes, but also makes them sweet, sugary.

Baking soda, which is in every home, has found wide application in the suburban area. A simple and safe remedy for human health will help get rid of many problems in the garden and in the garden.
