How to identify a pest
Grinder beetles are brown or black in color, their length reaches 1 cm, they enter the house along with damaged wood. Insects are rather shy, hide from their owners in the corners, and move more often at night. These harmful parasites damage books, furniture, herbariums, building materials. The grinder penetrates into any object and will not leave it until it is completely destroyed. Most of all, he prefers dry wood.
But it is not the insect itself that damages the material, but the larvae, which make long strokes in the wooden product in the form of zigzags and literally grind the wood into dust. Grinder larvae under normal conditions can exist for 5-20 years. If the wooden walls of the building are not treated with a specialized solution, then soon the grinder will find such a house and settle there forever.
You can detect a pest by the following signs:
- On the wood, winding paths and yellow dusty powder, reminiscent of dry mustard, are noticeable.
- The bark is detached from the tree.
- Sounds similar to the ticking of clockwork appear in the dwelling. They usually appear during the night.
- A brownish liquid substance with an unpleasant odor appears, which is released from the grinder's strokes.
- Detection of whitish tracks in timber structures.
If such signs are found, it is required to proceed with the active destruction of pests.
Fighting the grinder
An insect that has settled in a wooden structure can damage property very badly, because it reproduces quickly enough. There are many methods of getting rid of grinders:
- insecticidal agents;
- removal of infected areas;
- microwave processing;
- protective preparations and various impregnations for the treatment of wooden surfaces;
- help from fumigators and smoke bombs;
- home formulations;
- exposure to temperature;
- specialized processing.
For preventive purposes, protective impregnations are used, but they are not used to destroy parasites. If the grinder has already settled in the house, it is necessary to use insecticides that destroy both beetles and larvae. During the treatment period, you need to protect yourself with protective clothing, glasses, gloves and a respirator. You cannot enter the treated room for 4 hours.
A good effect is obtained with microwave treatment, in addition to all this, the procedure does not harm human health. This method is based on the effect of a microwave oven, when beetles are expelled from the house using the device. For example, carpenter beetles cannot stand the unpleasant smell of hydrogen phosphide. If the beetles have occupied a small area, then it can be simply removed.
You can affect insects with high or low temperatures. The dwelling should be frozen for 2-3 days at a cold temperature below -2 ° C or the affected objects should be heated from wood in a specialized chamber, where you can evaporate all moisture from them, while the grinder beetles will completely move out of housing. From folk methods, you can use liquid paraffin to expel insects. The substance is injected with a syringe into the hole and the outlet is covered with molten paraffin or wax, and also for this purpose, a window putty is used.
For another folk composition, take gasoline (90 g), dissolve turpentine in it (3 tsp. l), naphthalene (8 g) and kerosene (1 tsp. l). Use the resulting mixture to treat wooden surfaces, and then plaster or paint them. A vinegar impregnation with the addition of garlic protects against the penetration of insects, you can use a salt tincture. If the woodworm beetle has completely occupied the territory, it is necessary to seek the help of professional specialists who will carry out effective qualified processing.
