Good afternoon, my reader. When cultivating strawberries in order to improve the quality of berries and increase yields, it is recommended to carry out the procedure for pruning berry bushes. The operation is practiced only when the plant's need for this action is identified. You need to know the timing and rules for pruning.

When to trim strawberries

There are 3 periods for the procedure:

  • Spring

After the winter season, strawberry bushes with frozen leaves are present on berry plantings. When pruning during this period, damaged and broken parts are removed, trying not to harm the young fresh leaves and developing peduncles.

  • The period immediately after the collection of all berries

This period is considered the most optimal for pruning strawberries. Many gardeners carefully cut the entire aboveground part at a height of 30 mm from the surface. The bushes manage to form a lush deciduous mass before the cold period, and flower buds are also formed.

Rosettes are strengthened until winter, so a good bountiful harvest is ensured for the next season. Mass mowing of strawberry foliage is practiced for outlets over 2 years old. Young bushes do not need such a procedure.

  • Autumn

It is not recommended to completely clean the strawberry plantings during this period, so as not to cause death in winter due to freezing. Only dry parts of plants, as well as leaves with traces of disease damage, should be removed. Pruning is carried out 20-30 days before the first frost. Then the soil must be mulched using hay, chopped straw, coniferous litter or dry crushed peat.

Purpose of trimming

Basically, the treatment of strawberry plantings is aimed at removing leaves during the period when the strawberry bushes have finished fruiting.

Purpose of trimming:

  • partial rejuvenation of plantings;
  • getting rid of leaf plates infected with diseases, dried out, as well as mechanically damaged or pests;
  • prevention of fungal, viral and bacterial infections;
  • destruction of pests that hide for the winter in organic debris.

Pruning, when done correctly, can significantly increase yields. And also allows you to improve the quality characteristics of berries ripening for the next season.

How to trim

Before starting the procedure, it is necessary to prepare the tools and the necessary materials:

  • pruning shears with sharp blades (can be replaced with garden shears);
  • bag for folding plant residues;
  • a tool for loosening the soil, which will be required to process the soil around the outlets;
  • mulching material;
  • wood ash;
  • organic fertilizers;
  • gloves.
Carefully examine the strawberry planting, given that pruning is carried out if the bushes form a large number of leaves or traces of the presence of pests, as well as disease, are noticed.

Dry leaf plates, extra mustache, pedicels on which the berries ripen are removed with the help of scissors or pruning shears. The blades of the instruments are pre-disinfected. The soil is gently loosened, removing weeds at the same time. All cut pieces are collected in a bag. It is advisable to burn them.

It is not recommended to tear off the aerial part with your hands, so as not to harm the strawberry bushes, since they can be pulled out of the soil as a result of a strong jerk.

After the end of the procedure, a nutritional composition is prepared from poultry droppings combined with water in a ratio of 1:20. You can take a liquid mullein (1:10). Water a strawberry bed, and then dust the surface with sifted ash and mulch.

If, in the process of pruning, extensive infections are revealed, then such bushes are completely dug up, and the places where they grow are watered with a pink solution of potassium permanganate.

Features of processing remontant strawberries

If a remontant variety of strawberries grows on the site, then in the process of pruning, only dry, rotten, broken, affected leaves, as well as late flower stalks, are removed.

Complete pruning on such plantings is not carried out, since this can significantly reduce the duration of fruiting and reduce yields.

Competently and in a timely manner, the procedure for pruning strawberries is aimed at creating favorable conditions for plants. It assumes improvement for the next growing season of the bushes. The result is an increase in fruiting.
