Metal stove for a bath - how to do it yourself

  • Mar 28, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. When the owner of a private home decides to build a sauna stove, he usually has two options: fold the traditional brick structure or make it out of sheet metal. The last option is simpler, so we will analyze exactly how such a stove is made, and what the owner should pay close attention to.

How to assemble a structure

The metal oven is convenient to use and easy to manufacture. In order to collect it, it is enough to follow a very simple algorithm:

  1. We make a metal base.
  2. The sidewalls are attached to it perpendicularly. In order to control the correctness of the assembly, it is enough to use a regular square or at least a plumb line on a string.
  3. A backdrop is attached to the sides and base.
  4. An opening is made in the front element for the firebox door.
  5. The facade is attached to the sides.

  7. All joints are fixed tightly using electric welding. A household appliance of an automatic or semi-automatic type does not require the category of a master welder from the user - and it is quite suitable for use even by an inexperienced person.
  8. The bottom of the exact compartment is inserted into the structure, fixed (here you can use a wooden block) and boiled at the joints.
  9. A partition is placed - and also boiled at the joints.
  10. The inner wall of the deck is placed inside the structure and scalded at the joints.
  11. A hole is cut in the backdrop for the chimney - if this was not done before assembly. Its diameter is about 10 cm, no more needed.
  12. The upper part is applied and welded at the joints.
  13. In the upper part, a hole is cut under the door for boiling water.
  14. Behind the upper part, a 10-15 cm pipe is welded, with a section slightly smaller than the pipe. It is also welded at the joints.
  15. A chimney pipe with a damper is attached, which will regulate the draft.

Manufacturing features

When welding a bath oven, you need to pay attention to some subtleties:

  • The combustion chamber door should be thinner than 8 mm, but it is made of steel.
  • When welding, you need to monitor the deformation of the furnace - so that the elements do not pull each other to the side.

Therefore, before making a furnace, you should practice a little with metal sheets and a welding machine.

Furnace dimensions

The dimensions of the sauna stove must correspond to the area and volume of the sauna. But usually it is enough to use these sizes:

  • base measuring 100 by 60 cm;
  • furnace compartment 35 cm high;
  • a container for boiling water with an area of 58 by 58 cm with a height of 4 cm.

For all elements, it is better to take steel with a thickness of about 8 mm or more.

It is necessary to cut out the steel sheet, bearing in mind the following structural elements:

  • base and top;
  • the bottom of the firebox and the inner partition;
  • backdrop and facade;
  • oven sides;
  • wall for the deck.

You can cut metal sheets using a grinder, gas cutting - or, in extreme cases and with sufficient skill, using a welding machine. In any case, the sheet is laid on the base, the dimensions of the elements are marked - after which it can be cut.

Place for installing the oven

When choosing a place for an iron sauna stove, you need to take into account the size and architecture of the bath. The main thing is the location of the door. When opening, it must not touch the oven.

In general, when installing the oven, you need to be guided by the following:

  1. The stove is not placed in the corner - the bath will not warm up evenly.
  2. The base for the kiln should be made of refractory bricks or a layer of poured concrete.
  3. There should be fireproof spacers for thermal insulation (asbestos or similar) between the stove and the wooden walls.
  4. The diameter of the chimney must be at least 10 cm, and the height must be at least 3 m. Otherwise, there is a risk that smoke will enter the interior of the bath. This is permissible - but only in the case when a "smoke bath" is being built, and there is a completely different design. The described parameters of the stove are suitable only for a "white bath", and here the ingress of smoke into the interior is fraught with poisoning by the products of combustion of wood or coal.
Respect the norms - and enjoy the steam!
