Good afternoon, dear guests and subscribers of the "Build for Myself" channel!

Many homeowners are concerned that they have to pump out a drain pit or clean a septic tank almost every season or even more often due to overflowing wells. To address this issue, many homeowners increase the area of the filtration field or dig a new hole, redirecting the drain into it, but there is another great way - organizing bio-drainage.

It is also possible to drain pits, drain flooded areas and lower the groundwater level with the help of trees, which will naturally evaporate water into the atmosphere, driving it through themselves.

This process is called transpirationwhen the roots absorb a huge amount of water, and its stems and leaves evaporate into the atmosphere, which is a normal physiological process for all trees and in fact, this is a natural protection against overheating.

The transported volume of water depends on the type and age of the tree, for example, birch, pine or maple aged from 5 to 8 years evaporate 120-170 liters per day. Agree that this is a huge volume for one tree!

The larger the leaf area of the tree, the more intensive the transport of water. The main task is to plant a tree near our pit with a larger leaf area and crown density.

Some crops can even drain the soil within 10 meters of the trunk, thanks to the branched and dense root system. Such crops work as bio-pumps, pumping liquid out of the ground.

In one of the previous articles I wrote about deciduous trees, and in the same article I am expanding the list and at the request of people who responded in the comments, I will also cite fruit trees that evaporate a sufficient amount of water to minimize its content in soil.

So, in order to drain the soil, you need to plant crops with a dense crown and sufficient leaf area, as well as with a dense and branched root system.

1. Trees with NON-edible fruits and fast metabolism, which evaporate large volumes of water at the age of 10:

  • Bird cherry, Pine, Poplar, Maple, Willow - one tree evaporates on average from 150 to 250 liters of water per day.
  • Oak, Spruce, Hornbeam, Ash: from 250 to 300 liters / day.

2. Fruit trees and shrubs at the age of 7-10 years. Fruit crops, due to the smaller diameter of the trunk and short stature (except for the walnut), certainly evaporate less water and the most intensive metabolism falls on:

  • Walnut: 240-270 l / day
  • Plum (especially renklod), Cherry plum, Ternosliv - up to 170 l / day.
  • Sea buckthorn, hawthorn: 100-120 l / day.
  • Chokeberry and viburnum: 70 - 90 l / day.
  • Grapes 1 bush (spring-summer): 2 liters / hour.

The rest of the fruit trees: apple, pear, cherry, sweet cherry, quince - at the age of 10 years evaporate water in a smaller amount, but some species, when they reach 15-20 years old, can easily consume 200 liters / day due to the number and area of leaves, especially cherries.

From the author

When we bought the plot 4.5 years ago, from the old owners we got a drain pit with dimensions of 1.5 * 1.5 and a depth of only 1.3 m and a cherry plum tree growing for 12 years. In addition to the fact that the hostess did not pump out the hole for 10 years (which I could judge from the hermetically concreted slab), we also did not touch her for 2 years. After I filled it up after redeveloping the site and made another hole, the new one is now overflowing every 2-3 months and now, I am thinking of planting a tree near it too. Considering the plum.

Thank you for your attention and I really hope that the article was useful to you!
