Good afternoon, my reader. Cherry is a rather unassuming and frost-resistant culture. To achieve stable fruiting, every autumn a set of measures is taken to prepare the tree for winter. These include preparing the land, warming, pruning and feeding. They begin work in the first half of autumn in order to be in time before the tree goes into hibernation.

Land cultivation, fertilization

First, the near-trunk zone is dug to a depth of 15-17 cm so as not to touch the roots. At the same time, weeds are removed, then the soil is carefully loosened and leveled. Digging will improve the structure of the earth, its moisture and air permeability, and will help destroy hidden pests. A 10 cm deep trench is made along the edge of the circle to retain water.

2 buckets of water are poured onto 1 tree, the temperature of which is several degrees higher than the air. The procedure is aimed at protecting the soil of the root zone from freezing.

Watering is combined with autumn feeding, which does not contain nitrogen. Its presence in pre-winter preparation is dangerous because it will serve as an impetus for untimely growth and reduce the frost resistance of the culture.

For cherries up to 7 years old, you will need 2 kg of compost per sq. m, if older, then 3-4 kg. Organic fertilizers will replace organic matter. For non-fertile trees, make 2 tbsp. l. potassium chloride and superphosphate, for fruiting - 2 tbsp. l. potassium and 3 tbsp. l. superphosphate.

Prevention and insulation

In autumn, the garden is cleared of debris, fallen leaves and fruits are removed. Sick, dry and broken branches are cut, as well as those that grow at an acute angle. None of the plant residues can be left on the ground, everything is burned or taken out of the territory. Even if a small proportion of pathogens and pests manage to survive the winter, they will surely infect healthy plants next year.

Places of cuts are disinfected with garden varnish, crushed with activated carbon. Do not leave gum and cracks open on the trunk, they are cleaned and processed so that infection does not penetrate there.

After the first frost, they are sprayed with a urea solution. Dissolve 500 g of the preparation in 10 liters of warm water. The tool will not cause harm, but, on the contrary, will destroy the remaining dangerous microflora on an already dormant plant.

Even the most frost-resistant cherry varieties are sometimes frost-damaged. Trees up to 4 years old are insulated from the bottom of the trunk to the first skeletal branch with agrofibre, burlap, old wallpaper, spruce branches and other material. To protect against rodents, they are additionally wrapped with a plastic net.

Whitewashing the trunk will also scare away pests and prevent the spring sun from leaving on the bark. For the solution you will need:

  • 10 liters of water;
  • 2 kg of lime;
  • 1 kg of clay;
  • 200 g of previously dissolved copper sulfate.
First, slaked lime is added to the water, then vitriol and clay. The cherries are whitened before freezing so that the rains do not wash them away.
