Determining the landing site
Opt for a well-lit strawberry planting area. It is desirable that it be protected from wind and draft. Try not to plant strawberries next to potatoes, peppers and tomatoes so that they do not suffer from the same diseases.
Pay attention to the composition of the soil: alkaline or neutral, rich in nutrients are best suited for planting strawberries. If there are not enough micronutrients in the soil, consider adding a mineral mixture. For one square meter of the garden, a mixture of:
- 10 kg of manure;
- 50-60 g of superphosphate;
- 20-30 g of potassium salts.
It is best to transplant strawberries into open ground between mid-June and August. This will allow the plants to gain strength and become stronger before winter begins. If you transplant in May, you will be able to harvest a small amount of strawberries this season. This is due to the fact that when transplanted, strawberries are harvested in the same year.
When planting, strawberries are recommended to be treated with a composition of 50 g of copper sulfate per 5 liters of water: dip each seedling for a few minutes, then rinse with water. This will allow the plants to better resist bacterial and fungal infections, as well as pests.
The plants are planted in small holes where peat, wood ash, humus or compost can be added. These additives will allow the strawberry roots to grow faster.
Bushes are placed at a distance of 15 to 20 centimeters from each other, the root collar is just above ground level. Once planting is complete, compact the soil and water the plants.
How to care for strawberries
Water your strawberries regularly for a great harvest. If the soil is not moist enough, the berries will grow small and not juicy. Excessive watering will provoke rotting of the root system.
In order to determine the need for watering, take the soil in your hand and squeeze it in a fist: if the soil is crumbly, it needs watering. If a lump forms during squeezing, watering is not required.
Strawberries of any variety need to be watered weekly for the plant to thrive during the flowering period. As the crop ripens, water the strawberries every five days: about half a liter of water for each bush.
To keep the soil moist for a longer time, you can use black plastic wrap. It will inhibit the growth of weeds. For this, the plants must be planted on the ridges so that they rot in rainy weather. You can also use spunbond, which will allow air to enter, but can negatively affect plants in hot weather. With a small amount of weeds, a shade will be created that will protect the strawberries in hot weather and will keep the soil moist for a little longer.
To get a good harvest, strawberries are fed four times per season. For this, a compound of phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen is used. The first time the strawberries are fed immediately after the snow melts, using chicken manure, wood ash, urea, or using manure.
The second feeding takes place with the help of organic compounds during the appearance of the inflorescences. Potassium salts or superphosphate are added before flowering. The last feeding is carried out in August: mineral preparations are added to the ground.
