The difference is not only in color: what differences are hidden in electrical tape

Every experienced owner and craftsman knows that the most correct electrical tape is this blue one. Without it, there will be no reliable insulation, there will be no strong connection. The strength is not even in the truth, the strength is in the blue duct tape! However, joking aside, you should immediately note: not all electrical tape on the market is the same, despite the external similarity. So, let's try to understand this issue.

All electrical tape can be divided according to two main criteria. The first, quite obvious, is the manufacturer. By the way, very few people pay attention to him, but in vain. The second, less obvious, is the material from which the insulating tape is made. If everything is more or less clear with manufacturing companies: someone does better, someone does worse, then that most people do not even use different raw materials to create the tape guesses. Today, insulating tape can be made of HB or PVC. Let's talk about each of them.

Insulating tape HB

Cotton insulating tape has been well known to domestic craftsmen since the times of the Soviet Union. However, there is no need to think that they have done and are doing this only here. This material is well known all over the world. The main advantage of HB tape is its high wear resistance. It perfectly tolerates temperature extremes, high and low temperatures, including frost. It is very difficult to tear or rub it. However, HB tapes have disadvantages. The main one is that it most often does not withstand a voltage of more than 1 kV. In addition, such a tape has very poor moisture resistance.

It is worth using HB electrical tape mainly when performing any work inside a closed room. It can be safely used in a house or apartment, but not in those places where dampness may appear.

PVC insulating tape

PVC insulating tape appeared later than its cotton cousin. In fact, it is the complete opposite of HB tape. This material is extremely resistant to moisture and moisture, and also withstands operating voltage up to 5 kV. All this makes it an almost ideal insulating material. However, there are also disadvantages. The first is poor resistance to elevated temperatures. Already when heated to 80 degrees Celsius, the PVC tape begins to melt. At low temperatures, it also quickly deteriorates, crumbles. All this makes it unacceptable for outdoor work.

PVC tape can be used in most cases if there is no threat of extreme impacts. In the latter case, you will have to supplement the twisting with a layer of HB electrical tape or provide insulation in some other, additional way.
