Good afternoon, my reader. When the horsetail enters the garden or field, the fight against it begins immediately. The weed is brought in with new land, the wind and birds carry the spores, or it crawls to the site from the neighbors. Aggressively suppressing the growth of crops, it sucks out nutrients and water and gradually conquers an ever larger area.

Land preparation

In the spring, the horsetail forms straight pink-lilac stems, on which spores mature later. In summer, they are replaced by densely leafy vegetative shoots.

Digging the land does not give the desired result in weed control. Horsetail roots go 60 cm or more deep, so you need to try other methods:

  • before the delivery of land, it is checked as carefully as possible for the presence of black-brown horsetail roots;
  • the area is treated with calcium-containing preparations (lime);
  • deacidify the soil.

If you use these methods of control in conjunction with weeding and digging up the weed, then after 3-4 years the garden will be completely cleared.

Disposal methods

Chemicals and harmless folk remedies will help to remove horsetail:

  1. Reduce the acidity of the soil to weaken the plant. For this, dolomite flour is suitable, which is allowed to be used all year round. The first time at the beginning of the season is applied to 1 sq. m 500-600 g of substance. In the next 2 years, half the dose is used, and by the 4th the rate is reduced to 200 g. Replace it with 600 g of lime or 700 g of wood ash. The deoxidizer is first scattered on the ground, loosened the surface and watered. Lime is used after harvesting, and ash before arranging the beds.
  2. Mechanical destruction. The constant weeding out of the horsetail will prevent the roots from spreading freely and will partially weaken them. If it is necessary to process the field, then only digging with the help of a tractor will have an effect.
  3. In the spring, cut off shoots with a spore-bearing spikelet at the top.
  4. The aisles are covered with newspapers or mulched with cut grass, small pebbles, black agrofibre, splinters.
  5. Horsetail hates its neighbors such as rapeseed, arugula, white mustard and other cruciferous crops.
  6. Geese and ducks graze with pleasure in areas with a weed and eat it completely.
  7. Pre-winter sowing of rye. It will improve the structure of the soil, loosen it and absorb nutrients, thereby complicating the development of horsetail.

Often, gardeners decide on radical measures and resort to chemistry, but not all herbicides are able to effectively combat it. The most toxic drugs with prolonged action are suitable, for example, "Glyphos", "Agrokiller" or "Titus". It is advisable to use them on empty land so as not to be left without a crop.

Examples of other tested herbicides:

  1. Prima. For 10-12 days, it completely stops the growth of horsetail, is not washed off by rain, it is absorbed quickly. Not harmful to the earth, easily disintegrates, does not affect fertility and insects. Do not use in winter.
  2. Ground. It is used to combat all types of weeds, it is safe for cultivated plants.
  3. Zenkor. Harmless for vegetables and ornamental crops, it is allowed to use after planting. In greenhouses, it is ineffective, since at high temperatures the effect of the drug decreases.
