Why sailors wore bell-bottomed trousers for a long time, but today they are not relevant

The uniforms of sailors of earlier times were significantly different from what we see today. And the main difference was in the model of trousers - it was a fairly wide flare. Similar photographs and drawings can be seen in old photo albums, in books and on the Internet. Was this particular shape of the trousers chosen by chance, or does it make any sense?

The model appeared in the navy back in the days of sailing ships. Since then, flared trousers have repeatedly become part of the sailors' uniforms and the same number of times have been excluded from it. Modern sailors, whether military or civilian, wear simple trousers, and the bell-bottom remains history.

Why flare

Anything civilian or navy must be practical. Dress code first. Here we were not talking about fashion, although at certain intervals such men's clothing was fashionable. At sea, flared trousers performed more practical tasks, one of which was the convenience of performing their professional duties.

The main task is safety at sea. In the event of an emergency in the water, it is easier to remove wide trousers, even with shoes on. In those distant times, the trousers had a special fastener called a lapel, and a flap in front. If a person found himself overboard, it was enough to open the valve and move his legs. Clothes slipped off, and the sailor quickly floated to the surface.

In any case, the form was not only practical, but also comfortable for daily use (perhaps many would argue with this).

Over time, a lot has changed, and the sea vessels are not the same. Thanks to progress, the tasks of the sailors themselves have changed, and therefore some of the tasks, the fulfillment of which was facilitated by this particular form of clothing, disappeared. Today, sailors' flared trousers are practically out of use in all states.
