Self-propelled artillery units played a huge role on the eastern front. Nevertheless, this type of support armored vehicles traditionally recede into the shadows against the background of more frisky, graceful and aggressive relatives in the face of tanks. Soviet self-propelled guns have gone through a huge and rich development path during the 5 years of the war. Many of them have become weapons of victory. The SU-100 model was destined to become the main "cat swatter" for the German tank menagerie.
The ideological and structural predecessor of the Soviet "tank hunter" SU-100 was the SU-85 self-propelled gun, which appeared at the front in the summer of 1943. The famous 85 was made on the chassis of the T-34 tank, on which the 85-mm gun of the SU-122 assault mount was installed. However, it quickly became clear that the SU-85 was still not effective enough to destroy the German Tigers and Panthers without any problems. Therefore, in the fall of 1943, Soviet engineers began designing a new self-propelled gun.
The SU-100 was based on the T-34-85 medium tanks. The development of the self-propelled gun was carried out by the specialists of the Uralmashzavod design bureau. At the beginning of 1944, the new SPG was ready for mass production. The main difference between the new "tank hunter" was, of course, the large caliber of the main gun. The installation received a rifled 100 mm D-10S cannon of the 1944 model. Such a gun could confidently hit any medium and heavy tanks of the Wehrmacht. There were frequent cases when the SU-100 pierced the Tiger's frontal armor from a kilometer away. From the beginning of 1944 to mid-1945, almost 5 thousand of these self-propelled guns were produced in the USSR.
The new self-propelled gun was set in motion by a four-stroke V-shaped 12-cylinder diesel engine V-2-34 with a liquid cooling system. The return of such a unit at its peak could reach 500 horsepower. This engine was used in a slightly modified form until the late 1950s. On the highway, the ACS could accelerate to 50 km / h. On rough terrain, the self-propelled gun accelerated to a stable 20 km / h. The SU-100 tanks were enough for 140 km of cross-country driving.

Since the self-propelled gun was created on the basis of the T-34-85 tank, it received a new commander's cupola to improve visibility. Unlike its predecessor, the 100th model was equipped with the best observation means, including optics. Self-propelled gun ammunition was 33 shots. Compared to the SU-85, the new model also received better booking, although a decisive advantage was not achieved here. In addition, new ACS were produced at an accelerated pace, and therefore the quality of the hull welding often left much to be desired. However, for the "tank hunter" super-reliable armor was not required due to the specifics of the use of these machines.
