Very often, moss appears on the lawns, which grows and displaces the grass. We will understand the reasons for its appearance in this article.

The appearance of dicranum endulatum on the lawns (most often this is the name of the moss, which damages the lawns) gives a lot of concern.
Determining the causes of the appearance of moss
First, you always need to find the cause of the appearance, and only then decide how to eliminate it.
Moss appears when:
- increased acidity of the soil;
- too much moisture in the soil;
- lack of soil nutrition;
- strong shading in the area;
- very short cut grass.
On a note!
Moss can appear both with a combination of the above reasons, and with at least one of them.
High soil acidity
When determining the acidity of the soil, you can use a pH meter, in which the measurement scale is designed for a range of up to 8 units, which is enough for soil. Alternatively, you can check the acidity level in a specialized laboratory.
Types of soil acidity:
- Soils with acidity levels up to 4.5 are considered to be highly acidic;
- moderately acidic - up to 5.0;
- slightly acidic - up to 5.5;
- almost neutral - up to 6.0;
- neutral - over 6.1.
If the soil is acidic, the problem is solved by applying lime to the site (liming).
Excessive hydration.
Reasons for excess moisture in the soil:
- the site is flooded. Especially if it happens regularly;
- the irrigation system is incorrectly configured or malfunctioning;
- incorrect verticalization of the site.
On a note! Keep a close eye on the irrigation system. It requires constant changes to the basic settings - in the rain, watering is reduced, etc.
The solution to these problems is quite laborious. Installed drainage systems can help, or the entire site will have to be redone.
Insufficient soil nutrition
Overgrowing moss draws much more nutrients from the soil than lawn grass, and ultimately depress the lawn. With a properly selected mineral dressing, the moss will not grow.
How to feed your lawn?
It is advisable to do this up to 4 times per season.
- Early spring. Nitrogen fertilizers are used.
- End of June. Use nitrogen and calcium.
- End of July. Use nitrogen.
- Mid September. Phosphorus and calcium are used.
Apply fertilizer evenly and in equal parts throughout the entire lawn.
Overly shaded area
This problem, unfortunately, can be solved either by the demolition of buildings, or it is necessary to remove the plants from the site that create shade.
Short cut grass
With a very short mowing of grass, some of it dies off, and moss takes place. To prevent this, you do not need to mow the grass at the root.
Take care of your lawn correctly - and it will delight you all season with beautiful and bright grass.
