When choosing a knife, you should know and remember a few simple truths. First: a knife is a cutting tool, not a chopping tool. And therefore, using it outside extreme situations not for its intended purpose is a sure way to ruin not the cheapest instrument. And here no quality will help. The very shape and structure of the instrument are not prone to chopping blows. Although some companies that produce knives for hiking and survival in the wild are testing their tools for such an "extreme" impact.

Second truth: the length and shape of the blade, as well as the size of the knife, is mostly a matter of taste. If you want a really big knife (and it will be convenient to work with), then you should take a large one! Although most owners will agree that this tool should not be huge, if only because it is not burdensome to carry it. Ideally, the knife should still be as compact as possible.

Third truth: the design should be as simple as possible. Especially when it comes to choosing a tool for hiking in the wilderness. And this is a powerful argument against penknives. The fact is that the mechanisms for fixing and "throwing" the blade of the blade have two bad habits. First, they get clogged with dirt and stop working as they should. Secondly, they break corny. So it's best to take a good old blade in a sheath.

Fourth truth: the price shouldn't be high. The knife doesn't have to be expensive. It should always be remembered that although cheaper does not mean better, all this does not mean that a super-expensive sophisticated knife will give any serious advantages not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of service life and overall reliability. Moreover, the knife should not be very expensive. Because sooner or later it will break, or worse, it will be lost. Still, the blade is a tool, the loss of which should not turn into a terrible tragedy.

Fifth truth: it's not steel that's important, it's hardness. There are very different steels: carbon, powder, packet (Damascus), stainless. Ultimately, this is not important, but what hardness the material has on the Rockwell scale - HRC. The hardness of any steel is a kind of compromise between the cutting properties of the material and its strength. The higher the hardness, the less often you need to sharpen (and the more difficult it is to do this) the knife. However, as hardness increases, so does the likelihood that the blade will be damaged under extreme stress. The optimal HRC is 60 points. The Japanese love to make knives with an HRC of over 65 points, which makes them very sharp but also very fragile.

At the same time, it is difficult to sharpen such a tool yourself, and in the field it is almost impossible. The opposite is the American knives with an HRC of about 55 points. Such ones quickly become blunt and do not cut very well, but they do not break and you can sharpen an American instrument literally on any cobblestone, which is good for hiking enthusiasts. It should also be borne in mind that the higher the HRC of the knife, the faster and more easily it rusts.
