How to make the ax blade hold tight and not fly off the handle

  • Jul 31, 2021

An ax is a simple thing only at first glance. In fact, not everyone does not make porridge out of it, and they will not be able to chop correctly. What can we say about how to carry out the correct assembly of this tool. The latter is especially important if you want to always have an ax at hand, which will not fail in a difficult moment and will not become a source of additional problems. You can't just put a blade on a wooden handle. It would be nice to get creative and improve on a few things.

In order to fit the ax onto the handle as efficiently as possible, it is necessary to understand, as a result of which, in principle, the tool loosens. This process is quite natural and logical. The blade will loosen on the handle even if the ax is idle all the time. The main reason is the gradual drying out of the tree. Therefore, before going for a hatchet, you should take measurements from the blade: draw a hole for the nozzle on a piece of paper or cardboard and cut it out, thus making a template for trying on.

It is best to take an ax with a margin. Subsequently, it can be trimmed, making the handle noticeably smaller, after which cuts are threaded under the wedges in its upper part. They will hold wooden or metal spacers. Most often, one "spacer" along the entire part is enough, but in reality it is better to make several, and cross ones. Each spacer should fit snugly and not wobble. Moreover, they should not be too small, otherwise cracks in the structure cannot be avoided.

The next important step is making and installing wedges. If they are made of wood, birch is the best choice. If the spacers are made of metal, then tin must be used without fail. In the future, the installation of the prepared wedges is carried out. To do this, first, all the parts are laid in one plane, then the blade is seated on the handle using a blunt object. As soon as the handle sits properly, proceed to wedging. The wedges are positioned so that they can no longer be removed. Anything that remains sticking out above the structure is trimmed using a suitable tool.

Separately, it should be added that a number of home craftsmen improve the design of the assembled axes, strengthening the place of the blade attachment on the hatchet. For this, two important elements are most often used: rubber (the easiest way is to put a piece of the camera) and glue. Both are equally often and well used for advanced fixing of the ax blade, complementing the wedges. After work, it is very important to remove anything that remains sticking out of the tool structure. If the ax handle is made of wood, it is recommended to cover it with protective compounds.
