Why does the dzhigit need "cigarettes" on his chest: what a strange piece of clothing and why is it needed

Every compatriot at least once had to see the traditional men's clothing of the Caucasian peoples. Of course, there is a huge variety of it. However, there is at least one notable element that appears every now and then on the men's caftan. In appearance, these are some kind of strange, small and oblong pockets. They look as if they were created specifically for stacking cigarettes or cigars. It's time to find out what they really are and what they are for.

Remember the good old Soviet comedy "Prisoner of the Caucasus"? There, in several scenes, the hero of Yuri Nikulin - "Goonies" wore a caftan with these very pockets in which the cigarettes were put. True, one shouldn't think that real horsemen did just that. In Leonid Gaidai's film, such a design for "Goonies" was of a satirical nature, as if indicating that this the adventurer only pretends to be a horseman and does not even know why the pockets are actually needed on the Caucasian male dress.

So these pockets are called "gazyrnitsa" or "khazyrnitsa". The name comes from the Arabic word "gazyr" (well, or "khazyr"), which translates into Russian as "ready". A prepared mummy charge hides under a strange name. Thus, it is easy to guess that if the gazyr is, in fact, ammunition, then the gazyrnitsa is just a cartridge belt for conveniently carrying cartridges. A kind of dzhigitskaya "unloading" for ammunition from the century before last.

When exactly gazyrs and gazyrnitsy appeared in the Caucasus, it is difficult to say. Most likely this happened somewhere in the middle of the 19th century, when new firearms got into the region. From 1817 to 1864, a series of wars with the Russian Empire took place in the Caucasus, as a result of which this region was annexed to its composition. Needless to say, after the official defeat in the war, the region remained openly troubled for the empire for a very long time? However, such it was even before the arrival of Russia: local peoples and clans from ancient times willingly sorted out relations with each other with the help of bloodshed. All this has formed a very specific mentality among many peoples of the Caucasus, an attitude to forceful methods of resolving issues, and most the main thing brought up no less specific military tradition, on which the strongest imprint was left by local natural conditions: the climate and relief.

Actually, the need to wear cartridges on the chest directly stems from the specifics of the local military affairs. The gas itself is a paper cartridge with gunpowder and a bullet. These were created in all countries before the appearance of metal sleeves. The paper cartridge significantly accelerated the reloading of the weapon, but was very picky about storage and carrying. For this, the Caucasians came up with the idea of wearing them in oblong pockets. It was always possible to quickly draw out ammunition from the gas chamber and equip a weapon, even while sitting on a horse. This is especially important when conducting a discharged battle in a guerrilla war on rough terrain.

The idea of Caucasian horsemen, who fought with each other and with the "imperials", seemed extremely successful and the military of Russia himself. Very soon, this element of equipment was adopted from the Caucasians, first of all, by the Cossacks, who settled on the frontier to control the borders. Moreover, many people from the Caucasus served in the army of the Empire, and therefore it was only a matter of time before the spread of fashion to local clothes and to gas dishes. Even Russian emperors wore gazyrs, just look at the photographs of Nicholas II.

Gradually, from exclusively utilitarian things, both gazyry and gazyrniki turned into a decorative thing. The military tradition has left a strong imprint on the culture of local peoples. Very quickly, gas boxes became part of the traditional and national men's costume. For the region, there was nothing surprising in this, because every man, horseman, must be a warrior. Of course, there is no gunpowder in decorative gases. Most often these are jewelry made of metal, wood and bone. Often, "ceremonial" gazyrs have beautiful caps covered with patterns.

After the Revolution in the Russian Empire and the creation of the Land of Soviets, gazyr did not disappear anywhere either as a decorative or as an applied element. It was also used by all the peoples of the Caucasus, as well as the Cossacks, including those who remained in the USSR and subsequently took part in the Second World War as part of the Red Army. However, by the beginning of the 1930s, the need for gas boxes, as a utilitarian element of a suit, finally disappeared by itself. The reason for this was the further development of firearms. Today gazyrs are a purely decorative element.
