Why did motorists drill the piston skirt before?

  • Jul 31, 2021

Back in Soviet times, there were many drivers who were engaged in independent tuning of their favorite swallow. This applies not only to the creation of additional trim elements. We are talking, among other things, about the modernization of individual structural elements. For example, citizens drilled holes in the "skirts" of engine pistons. Why did they do this, and is there any point in drilling the pistons of modern cars in the same way?

Not all pistons have the aforementioned characteristic "skirts". And so, back in the years of the Soviet Union, motorists were visited by an interesting idea that the high walls of the working part of the piston in theory, they can significantly worsen the degree of lubrication of engine elements, which means they lead to a loss of power of the power unit.

As a result, it was decided to start drilling several holes in the “skirt” on each side to reduce the mass of the piston and create additional channels for oil movement. It was assumed that all of the above helps to increase the output of the motor. And the strangest thing is that it really worked! Moreover, in the XX century, not only our compatriots, but also the drivers of many other countries came up with this idea.

And here it’s just right to ask: if the method is really working, then why did the manufacturers not pick up the wave during all this time? Well, here everything is extremely simple. The fact is that such a revision has a number of strictly negative consequences of varying degrees of danger. For increasing engine power, improving piston stroke and improving lubrication of power unit elements will have to pay at least a serious deterioration in the area of heat dissipation and a decrease in strength pistons. As a result, the engine wears out faster, and each piston can become a source of serious overheating at any moment.
