Which varieties of tomatoes are best suited for growing outdoors

  • Jul 31, 2021

Almost everyone loves tomatoes, which is why this crop is grown even in climatic conditions that are not most suitable for this, for example, far beyond the Urals. For cultivation in such a climate, low-growing varieties of tomatoes are best suited, which do not need to "invest" in growth, but give all their strength to flowering, ovary and ripening of fruits. A distinctive feature of low-growing varieties of tomatoes is rapid growth to the required height, and then rapid flowering, after which an equally rapid ripening of fruits occurs.

The most popular varieties of low-growing tomatoes and hybrids

  • Bullfinch deliberately bred by Russian breeders for cultivation in the harsh conditions of the domestic Trans-Urals, the Far East, Karelia, and so on. This variety belongs to the early, and its first fruits can be harvested at the end of June - at the beginning of July. The fruits turn completely red a little over three months after sowing the seeds. The trunk and branches of this plant are so strong and powerful that there is no need for a garter. The plant reaches a height of no more than 50 centimeters, it can feel great on a soil that is poor in trace elements, but quickly dies in a nitrogenous soil. The weight of one ripe fruit is about 150 grams, they can be used for preparing both traditional salads and for winter preparations.
  • Visibly invisible, the fruits of this variety ripen even faster, they need no more than three months for this. This variety is slightly higher than the previous one and needs a garter. Ripe fruits weigh about 120-130 grams, have a pink color, an even and smooth surface, and a round shape. Tomatoes of this variety are good for everyone, but they taste slightly sour.
  • Summer resident, ripens in 3-3.5 months, the bushes reach heights of up to 70 centimeters, while the "stockiness" does not differ, so you have to tie it up. The fruits of this variety are capable of ripening even in a short, cold and little sunny summer. They taste sweet, in appearance they are red, weighing no more than 100 grams. Suitable for salting and pickling, as well as fresh consumption.
  • Lady fingers - the most, perhaps, the most famous and oldest tomato variety, which was popular in Soviet times. The variety is unpretentious neither to the weather, nor to the soil, nor to care, but it still needs to be watered. The bushes reach a height of 60-70 centimeters, the fruits ripen within 3-3.5 months. Tomatoes are red and oblong in shape, great for canning and salads.
  • Siberian troika enjoys enviable popularity today, and it is grown in central Russia and even in the Krasnodar Territory. I fell in love with this variety not only for its rapid ripening, but also for its sweet and very large fruits, the weight of which can reach 300 grams.
  • Alsou feels great both outdoors and in a greenhouse. In favorable conditions, the height of the bush can reach 1 meter. The fruits are large, reaching 500 grams, so it is imperative to tie up the plant. Tomatoes taste sweet and sugary, making them great for making tomato paste and juice.
As you can see, today there are varieties of tomatoes that are able to grow and bear fruit even beyond the Arctic Circle, and there are many such varieties. However, our list will not be complete without the Demidov variety, which is distinguished by its frost resistance.
