Why did drivers drill pistons in some cars?

There is such a category of motorists, do not feed it with bread, let us modify and improve something in your favorite "swallow". The pistons of the power unit drilled for overhang in one or several places are just an example of such tuning from enthusiasts. So why do motorists go for such a thing, is there really any sense from the holes in the pistons and will such a modernization not harm the engine?

This type of tuning is "popular" and goes back to the last decade of the 20th century. Soviet drivers began to modernize the pistons of passenger cars in this way after the appearance of parts with new high "skirts". Then many "enthusiasts" were not satisfied with the factory power of the engines of civilian cars, and they were looking for ways to squeeze as many horses out of their installation as possible.

As a result, somewhere in the mid-1980s, a legend was born in the automotive environment that new pistons with skirts supposedly run worse due to the fact that they lack lubricant. Some Kulibins began to assert that the piston "skirt" significantly restricts the oil flow, as a result of which the pistons move harder, which means that the engine power gets into. Needless to say that such speculative intellectual constructions had very little in common with reality?

Nevertheless, "craftsmen" began to ream automobile pistons on a grand scale. In the 1990s, with the advent of the “market”, the situation only worsened. The service of drilling holes in an important part of the power unit began to be offered almost everywhere. Of course, reaming of the pistons does not have any real positive effect on the operation of the engine. Moreover, the effect can be strictly opposite.

The fact is that any non-factory opening in the skirt is most often made with a violation of the rigidity of the structure. And since the engine piston is a part that is regularly exposed to a monstrous force, handicraft holes naturally destroy an expensive part, significantly increasing its wear rate and the risk of one-time breakage.
