How to find out at home if the water in a well or well is clean, and is it drinkable? 5 best ways

  • Sep 03, 2021
Hello dear readers! Today I tried to collect for you all the most useful and valuable information on testing water with improvised means at home. Hope you find this information useful!

The entire older generation told me that the water from the well is the purest and most useful. And I believed in this for a long time, until I decided to try it. I wish I hadn't. It was so dirty that my stomach ached for the next few days. It turns out that not all wells have crystal clear water.

This article will discuss how to independently check the quality of water from a well or well. There are special devices for this, but we will not use them, since they are too expensive. The following methods will work for every person. Let's start!

Determine by scent

This should be done first, but many people forget about such a simple requirement. First you need to smell the water heated to 25 degrees, and then to 50. If there is no foreign smell, then everything is in order. If the stench is present, then you need to figure out what exactly it is connected with.

  • A sweet smell indicates the presence of hydrogen sulfide. It is strictly forbidden to drink such water.
  • The smell of rot indicates that there are organic contaminants in the water.
  • You need to be especially careful with the scent of bleach. If you drink such a liquid, then you can completely destroy the digestive tract.
  • Even oil products can be present in the water. You can identify them by their characteristic smell.

Visual inspection

Pour water into a glass container. If the color is cloudy, then this indicates the presence of foreign trace elements. Better to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Tasting

If it seems to you that the water is of insufficient quality, then you should not drink it. You can get yourself indigestion and other unpleasant illnesses. Better to play it safe a thousand times. Let's get down to the water tasting itself:

  • the taste of metal indicates a high iron content;
  • sweet taste indicates the presence of gypsum;
  • salty taste occurs due to the large amount of salts;
  • bitterness appears due to magnesium sulfate;
  • a large amount of organic decomposition will give the water a rotten taste.

Take a small amount of liquid for tasting.

Determine the hardness of water from a well or well

Water will be hard when it contains large amounts of magnesium and lime. This can be determined in the following ways:

  • 1. Pour water into transparent glasses and hold it there for 30 minutes, then drain. If a white coating remains on the walls, then the water is hard.
  • 2. Add a few drops of shampoo to the water and try to lather. With increased rigidity, this will not work.

The checks are as simple as possible, but at the same time effective.

Traditional methods of testing water quality

  • 1. Find a clean glass and put a little water on it. If stains remain after drying, then the liquid contains a large amount of impurities.
  • 2. Take a transparent container, pour water into it and put it in a dark place for 5 days. The best way to do this is to use the basement. If the water begins to bloom, then it should not be eaten.
  • 3. Boil the liquid for 7 to 8 minutes, and then look at the sides of the kettle. If a yellow scale appears there, then this indicates the presence of calcium. If the color is brown, then the water contains a lot of iron oxide.
  • 4. Take a small bar of soap and make a soapy water solution. If the quality of the water is poor, the soap residues will settle on the bottom. In a good liquid, they would simply disappear.
  • 5. Put a little potassium permanganate in a container with water. If the shade turns pink, then everything is in order. Yellow color indicates a low quality of water, so drinking it is highly discouraged.
If you disagree with something, refute it in the comments. But I ask you, do it culturally and argue!
