Preparing winter garlic for planting

  • Sep 03, 2021

Winter garlic is highly resistant to diseases, gives an excellent harvest, much larger than summer. In addition, it is much better stored until the next season. There is an external difference between summer and winter garlic: in winter, the cloves are very even and evenly located around the stem, the shell is thicker, and the taste is sharper.

Preparing the land for planting

Site selection begins in early September. A high place is best for planting winter garlic, so that the melted snow does not flood the planted cloves. It is good to plant garlic after tomatoes, legumes, or cucumbers. They dig a bed to the depth of a shovel, fertilize the soil. Be sure to let the bed sit down. If there is little rain in September, spill the dug up soil with water. Ash is scattered between the beds, which are made at a distance of 20-25 cm, to prevent the appearance of pests. The soil should not be acidic, otherwise the garlic will not grow, so you need to decide and lower the acidity of the soil, if necessary, to medium.

Landing

The material for planting must be carefully selected, taking into account the integrity of the teeth, the presence of whole scales and the absence of damage, especially the lower, root part. The selected material must be processed in one of the following ways:

  • brine (2 tbsp. spoons per liter of water, soak for 30 minutes);
  • copper sulfate (10 g sulfate per bucket of water, 3-4 hours);
  • light pink solution of potassium permanganate;
  • use fungicides purchased from specialized stores.

It is imperative to respect the landing distances. The size of the bed in width should be at least a meter, the distance between the rows should be at least 20 cm, and between the teeth 10-12 cm. After planting, cover with peat, foliage or sawdust.

It is better to plant it as late as possible, two weeks before frost, otherwise, in more or less warm weather, the garlic will begin to grow immediately and die at the first cold weather, it will not survive until spring.

Care

The planted teeth must be treated with special disinfectants, which are offered in a large assortment in specialized stores. In the spring, when it warms, it is necessary to immediately remove the covering material so that the garlic does not rot and grow stunted.

Whichever method of planting winter garlic you choose, with proper care and adherence to all planting and maintenance rules, you will have a decent harvest of this bulbous vegetable.
