1. Olympic facilities-2004, (Athens, Greece)
It is not surprising that in the homeland of the Olympic Games - the Greek capital Athens - they really wanted to host a grandiose sporting event again, as they did thousands of years ago. Initially, it was planned to hold the anniversary Summer Olympics in 1996, but then the American Atlanta was chosen. But the games of 2004 have already been given to Athens. Immediately after the decision was made, an active construction campaign began for the construction of sports and infrastructure facilities, as well as the Olympic Village.
According to various information, the Greek government spent from 9 to 16 billion euros on the construction. It just turned out that the grandiose facilities after the Games were not needed: in Athens there was no such great demand for sports complexes. In addition, the annual cost of maintaining the former Olympic infrastructure averaged 500 million euros annually, and here and a few years after the Games in Greece came the hardest economic a crisis. Ultimately, the Athens Olympic complex was abandoned.
Today, objects that no one needs are in a frankly depressing state: the competition center on rowing, in which there is still water, it became like a musty swamp and a breeding ground for blood-sucking insects. The same fate befell the swimming pools. The stadiums are overgrown, and the Olympic Village is slowly turning into ruins.
Interesting fact: Athens is not the only example of this attitude towards former Olympic venues. The same sad trend befell complexes in Rio de Janeiro and Beijing. In Sochi, the situation is not so depressing: they still try to keep most of the buildings in proper condition, however the demand for winter sports in the resort town is low, and therefore the former ski jumps or bobsleigh tracks are slowly coming to desolation.
2. Abandoned nuclear power plants
As in the case of the Olympic venues, there are enough abandoned nuclear power plants in the vastness of the Planet. In the post-Soviet territory, the most famous are the unfinished Crimean, Bashkir or Tatar nuclear power plants. In Europe, there are still ghost stations in Austria (Zwentendorf) and Spain (Lemoniz). A lot of abandoned nuclear power plants are located in America - for example, Belfonte, Cherokee or Marble Hill.
The reason for such a number of unfinished nuclear power plants was the processes in the society, which gradually saw less and less positive in the use of nuclear energy. True, this happened unevenly and at different times. So, after the incident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, they began to get disillusioned with nuclear energy in the West. But the whole world turned its back on nuclear reactions after the Chernobyl disaster. It was then that everyone understood what kind of threat humanity poses itself, carelessly referring to the peaceful atom.
Pressure began from environmentalists and just a concerned part of society, more and more attention was paid to the concepts of creating alternative energy sources, which are also environmentally friendly. Therefore, since the end of the eighties of the last century, many atomic structures have been frozen, and even practically finished objects turned out to be unnecessary for either people or the state.
3. City of Galician Culture (Santiago de Compostela, Spain)
Towards the end of the twentieth century, the Parliament of Spanish Galicia announced the start of a project competition for the creation of the City of Galicia - Cidade da Cultura de Galicia. Then the victory was won by the project of the architect Peter Eisenman. The Monte Gaias hill was chosen as the site of construction, and after a few years interesting structures appeared there, which resemble both rocks and shells of mollusks. They were supposed to house concert halls, galleries, museums, a library and an archive.
The construction, which took almost a decade, turned out to be twice as expensive as initially, and then it was completely frozen by order of the regional government. A total of six buildings were to be built, but two of them were never finished. In addition, the completed objects, despite the developer's calculations, turned out to be unnecessary, because the society did not show due attention to them. Therefore, unusual structures remain empty, as a sad reminder of an irrelevant cultural project.
4. Ryugyong Hotel (Pyongyang, DPRK)
One of the most famous features of totalitarian regimes is the creation of megaprojects that would become symbols of the greatness of their rule. That is why in 1987 the North Korean leadership under the leadership of President Kim Il Sung announced the beginning of the construction of the tallest building in the state - the Ryugyun Hotel. It was planned that 105 floors would fit in a structure with a height of 330 meters. The number of rooms is also amazing: according to various sources, there should have been working from 3,000 to 7,700 apartments.
The construction of the grandiose hotel was going to be completed by the 1989 World Festival of Youth and Students. Only problems with the supply of materials slowed down the process: the main structures were completed only by 1992. But after the construction and completely stopped for a whole decade and a half. The reason for the freezing of the project was economic crisis, and therefore the frame of "Ryugyon" for many years has become a symbol of unfulfilled hopes DPRK.
However, construction was nevertheless resumed in 2008, and after the next three years, the facade was completely covered with glass. At the same time, the opening date of the hotel complex was set - 2013. Here is just a grandiose event, which did not take place. And experts from all over the world are skeptical about the future of the building: for example, many believe that the hotel will not open at all, and if this happens, then it is unlikely that it will be able to fill it with guests at least half.
5. Mirabelle Airport (Montreal, Canada)
Plans to build a new airport for the second largest Canadian city of Montreal were first announced back in 1967. The presented concept was quite impressive: the largest airport area on the planet - 40,000 hectares, the estimated passenger traffic - on average, 50 million people per year. In addition, the complex was also supposed to include its own infrastructure, which is represented by a high-speed railway line, a monorail, an ordinary highway, as well as a hotel complex. At the airport itself, six terminals were supposed to appear, six runways, including a runway for receiving supersonic airliners, and much more.
At first, everything went actively and very promising: the first stage of the airport was put into operation in 1975. But then the problems began. It was only during construction that it became clear that the project developers had incorrectly planned the location of traffic flows. In addition, an overall decline in the economic attractiveness of Montreal was noted. Therefore, instead of the planned 50 million, only three million passengers passed through Mirabell Airport per year.

But not only further development was frozen: in 2004, due to unprofitability, the airport stopped servicing regular commercial flights. Although the structure and infrastructure were not abandoned immediately. So, according to the editorial office of Novate.ru, races have begun on the spacious runways. But the terminal building was turned, oddly enough, into a film set. This situation lasted ten years, and in 2014 it was decided to dismantle the terminal building, because too much money was spent on its maintenance, and it was not profitable at all.
