Several years ago, the first American destroyer Zamvolt was launched. From the outset, the project was met with mixed reactions. First of all, even the military themselves were confused by the cost of this miracle of technology. The creators, however, assure that such a destroyer is essentially the ship of the future. Of course, the most striking feature of the destroyer is its unusual shape. It's time to look under the hull of this ship.
Americans are good at doing all kinds of things! For example, throwing billions of dollars towards a shipyard, repeating like a mantra the word: "Work!" The clearest example of the expensive-rich in the performance of the Pentagon is the destroyer type "Zamvolt". These ships were developed by American engineers as part of the DD-21 program and are, in fact, a scaled-down version of the original version of the ship. The first Zumwalt DDG-1000 cost the Americans more than $ 3 billion. Construction began in 2013. The ship was launched in the fall of 2016. The ship went on alert in 2018.
The main feature of the Zamvolt destroyers (in addition to their colossal price) is their use of stealth technologies. Thanks to special means and the shape of the side, the effective dispersion area of the destroyer has been reduced by 50 times. In addition, the vessel is equipped with a breakwater to reduce its visibility from the air. The total displacement of the ship is 14 797 meters. Tons. The dimensions of the destroyer are 183x24.6x8.4 meters. The ship is powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce Marine Trent-30 gas turbine power plants with a capacity of 78 MW. As a result, Zamvolt can be accelerated to 30 knots (55.56 km / h). The crew on the combat schedule is 148 sailors and officers.
It is assumed that in the foreseeable future, the advanced Zamvolt will completely replace the older Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. However, Americans are in no hurry to write off the "old man" for scrap. These destroyers are still in production, starting in 1988, despite the fact that the military themselves consider them obsolete. It should also be understood that the new destroyer is almost 3 times more expensive. Today the construction of Zamvolts costs the US budget $ 4.4 billion. The construction of "Arlie Burks" at one time cost $ 1.4 billion per unit. At the same time, the most expensive version of "Arly", taking into account inflation, cost the US military budget $ 2.2 billion.
In total, the United States plans to release 24 destroyers of a new type, taking into account already 3 built ones. Moreover, from the beginning, the Pentagon counted on the production of 32 ships. For comparison, the already mentioned "Arly" in the ranks is 68 out of 89 planned. Another Zamvolt and six more Arleigh Burks are under construction at the shipyards right now.
With regard to weapons, here, too, "Zamvolt" would very much like to be ahead of the rest of the planet. Even before the ship was put into operation, there were many stories that the ships would be equipped with the latest electromagnetic cannon-railgun. However, today all this is nothing more than a PR campaign. If only because the technology of these guns is still unfinished. Although, in theory, the power plant of an Ohio-class ship is quite capable of giving enough energy to fire such a weapon.

In the meantime, Zamvolt has to use traditional US naval weapons. The destroyer is equipped with two 30-mm AU Mk.46 anti-aircraft guns, RUM-139 VL-Asroc anti-submarine missiles, RIM-162 ESSM surface-to-air missiles, as well as the 20th Mk.57 UVP with 80 Tomahawk-class missiles.
