Preparing oat seeds for sowing

  • Sep 06, 2021

Although oats are not the most popular cereal, they are still in demand today. It is used not only for obtaining grains for flour and cereals, but also as an effective green manure, and also as part of feed mixtures for animals. But to get a good harvest, you first need to take care of the oat seeds.

Growing conditions

First, you need to decide whether it is possible to grow oats at all on the site. This culture requires:

  • neutral or slightly acidic (pH up to 5-6) soils - oats do not tolerate alkalization;
  • loamy, sandy loam or peaty soil, cultivation on clayey soils is permissible;
  • air temperature not higher than 40 degrees;
  • long daylight hours during the growing season;
  • a sufficient amount of moisture (oats do not tolerate drought).

Preparing seeds for planting

Preparation of oat seed for sowing includes the following stages:

  1. Sorting. Seeds are divided into first and second grains using calibration sieves. The names indicate which grain fraction should be used in the first place: the former are larger, more rounded, when grown, they bush well and bring a rich harvest.

  2. Warming up. Oats are placed in the sun for 3-4 days and warmed up to 15-20 degrees for 3-5 days before planting. At this time, ventilation must be provided in the warming room: if the grain was placed in storage damp, it may begin to rot or even burn. If there are no conditions for warming up in the sun, oats are processed in dryers at a moderate temperature so as not to lose their germination.
  3. Etching. It needs to be discussed separately.

Dressing oats before sowing

To protect oat crops from fungal and infectious diseases, it is necessary to disinfect the grain. At the same time, this must be done so that the seed does not lose germination. Therefore, pickling is a necessary part of the preparation.

There are basically two options used:

  1. Dry. In this case, work with dry (no more than 14% moisture) seeds at least 2 months before sowing.
  2. Semi-dry - processing a couple of days before sowing. The grain is passed through a solution of the preparation, to which substances are added that provide adhesion and envelopment with the mixture of grains.

Several drugs are used in agriculture:

  • A solution of formalin with a concentration of 40% in an amount of 380 ml per 1 ton of grain. The composition is prepared by diluting the working dose of formalin in 30 liters of pure water. As a result, oats suffer less head smut and other fungal diseases.
  • "Granosan" - 2 kg of the preparation is diluted in 10 liters of water and used for 1 ton of seed.
  • "Vitavax" - about 3 kg of the drug for the same amount of oats.

Additionally, seed treatment with microelements is often carried out if the content of boron, manganese, zinc or copper in the soil is less than the norm. The following preparations are used (the amount is indicated per 1 ton of seeds):

  • boric acid - 100 g;
  • copper sulfate - 300 g;
  • zinc sulfate - 180 g;
  • manganese sulfate - 120 g.

If possible, growth regulators ("Agate" and analogues) are also used immediately before sowing in an amount of about 55 g per ton.
