Every gardener wants to grow juicy and even carrots. However, it happens that some pests eat up vegetables.
Who is able to eat carrots on the site
Root crops are harmed by the vole mouse, which moves underground and gnaws large cavities in the vegetables. Bears, slugs, wireworms also spoil the harvest.
If damage is found on the carrot, immediately start fighting the pest, otherwise you will be left without a crop.
In the ground
The following parasites eat root crops underground:
- field mice - move underground, make moves to plantings and can destroy the entire crop within 1-2 weeks;
- rootworm nematode - a round worm, multiplying rapidly, it is almost impossible to completely get rid of it;
- bear - a large insect, adult specimens, as well as larvae harm root crops and stems;
- carrot fly - larvae of the second generation damage carrots and tops, vigorous activity is manifested from July 15 and continues until the last days of August;
- wireworm - harms root crops, sucks juices from carrots, after which it becomes difficult for vegetables to resist diseases;
- mole rat - a rodent moving through deep burrows destroys the tops, and stores up root crops for the winter.
On the surface of the garden
Above are parasitic insects:
- garden moth - small worm-like larvae use carrot tops for food, thereby destroying crops;
- winter scoop - thick shiny caterpillars quickly gnaw through the leaves at the base, from which the plants die;
- carrot flap - a tiny insect that feeds on leaf juice.
What ways can you deal with them
With the right control method, you can protect your crop. Use a set of measures: chemicals, various folk methods and optimal agrotechnical actions.
Using traps
To get rid of mole rats and vole mice, you can buy a special trap in the store or make it yourself.
For manufacturing, you will need a three-liter jar, on the inside, lubricate the walls with vegetable oil, place a piece of cheese or sausage and place the container on the area so that the hole is slightly looked up. The pest will want to taste the bait, will penetrate into the container, but will not be able to crawl back because of the slippery walls of the can.
You can use a normal, effective glue trap. The design is quite simple: apply the adhesive to a plank and place it on the carrot bed. The mouse will stick to the board, and you will calmly catch it.
Use of chemicals
Rodents can be eliminated with Fostoxin. Dry substances must be spread over the beds, liquid agents are diluted in water and watered on the soil. But don't forget that chemicals can harm animals.
The carrot fly is eliminated by using the chemicals "Arrivo", "Ziper".
They get rid of the wireworm using ammonia-containing fertilizers: ammonium chloride, ammonium nitrate. Benefits and liming of the soil.
The nematoda is taken out with the drug "Dekaris" - a tablet is diluted in 1 liter of liquid and the culture is watered.
Using folk methods
To combat rodents, you can spread rags soaked in ammonia or birch tar over the plantings, they do not tolerate the smells of these substances. And also at night you can install a bucket of embers next to carrot beds: mice do not like the smell of smoke.
From a small defeat by leaf beetles, you can use the following means:
- citrus peel;
- branches from conifers;
- tobacco dust.
Spread them out in the aisles.
They get rid of garden moths using a decoction of tomato tops (3.5 kg), brewed in boiling water (10 l). Add laundry soap to the boiled solution. Let it brew for 2-3 days and start processing the plantings.
Medvedka is kicked out of the site using:
- kerosene;
- any washing powder;
- infusions of black pepper or mustard.
They are saved from carrot flies in this way: they take ash powder, tobacco dust and lime in the same amount. The components are mixed and the aisles are powdered.
Other pest control methods
Electronic scarers help to drive out pests from sites. You can buy them in stores. Devices do not kill rodents, but only scare away.
You can get rid of the beanie with a non-woven material by covering the planting. It is necessary to pre-pour tobacco dust or irrigate the land and carrots with soapy water.
Gall nematode cannot be destroyed by one method, as it gets used to any method. Basically, you need to adhere to preventive measures: cultivating the land with formalin, use clean tools when performing work.
