The kitchen belongs to the so-called wet zones due to the presence of water supply and drainage systems. This status dictates its own conditions for the choice of finishes. It should be moisture resistant and easy to clean. It is better not to use some finishing materials in the kitchen.

❌ Carpet
Carpet is not an easy-to-maintain type of flooring. In fact, this is the worst option that can be used in the kitchen. Here this disadvantage can turn into a global problem. Water or pieces of food will sooner or later end up on the floor. You can remove some types of dirt with a washing vacuum cleaner, but over time it will no longer cope with them. In this case, you will have to contact the dry cleaner.
But wiping porcelain stoneware, linoleum or tiles is not difficult. The self-leveling floor is also easy to clean. If you want warmth and comfort, then a carpet under the dining group or a path between the table and the work area made of materials that can be washed or dry cleaned can become a compromise.
❌ Embossed tiles
Despite the obvious advantages of ceramics, its choice should also be approached wisely. For example, for flooring, it is better to choose products without a pronounced texture or relief. Otherwise, dirt can accumulate in the grooves, which will not be easy to remove.
In addition, it is better not to use glossy tiles as a floor covering - it becomes dangerously slippery when wet. It is also better not to use natural marble tiles in the kitchen, since marble is a rather porous material, it is easily scratched, absorbs moisture and becomes stained.
❌ Plastic panels
Although plastic wall panels are water resistant, they do not tolerate high temperatures well, therefore use them as an apron carefully, and they can be simply dangerous in combination with gas hob. Moreover, when melted, the material can release toxic substances.
Another disadvantage is the "non-breathing" walls, if moisture gets under the panel there is a risk of fungus formation. Alternatively, glass panels can be used, but often the design looks outdated and is more difficult to maintain. For an apron, tiles, porcelain stoneware or stone, artificial or natural, are much better suited.
❌ Untreated wood
Wood in the kitchen looks nice and cozy, but requires regular maintenance. Lining the walls or countertops - they must be specially treated.
The wood must be covered with protective compounds (oil, varnish, wax), which will prevent it from rotting and make it loyal to the perception of household chemicals. To create a high-quality coating, you will need to process it in several layers and then update it every six months or a year.
❌ Light grout
A light-colored grout for tiles in the kitchen is a rather impractical solution. It gets dirty very easily, especially in the apron area. With active cooking, the seams will quickly become untidy. To avoid this, it is better to choose a darker shade of grout. On it, the dirt will not be so noticeable. In addition, contrasting combinations of tiles and seams look quite impressive.
If the design is still more suitable for a light grout, then you can additionally cover it with a water-repellent impregnation, in which case it will not absorb dirt and will remain light for a long time.
❌ Lots of textiles
The more textiles in the kitchen, the more difficult it will be to keep clean. Soft panels for wall decoration are contraindicated. As for decoration - curtains, tablecloths, seat cushions or chair covers - they should be easy to clean, resistant to abrasion and fading, preferably removable.
Velvet fabrics, silk and linen are undesirable in the kitchen, as they cannot be washed or dry-cleaned frequently. For window decoration, the easiest way is to choose roman or roller blinds.
