Pruning goals:

  • harvesting several times per season (raspberries bear fruit for more than 2 months);
  • preparation of a crop for harvesting in the next season (the plant needs rest);
  • the site is decorated with neat, well-groomed bushes (too dense raspberry tree quickly degenerates);
  • prevention of fungal, viral diseases and attacks of insect pests.

Types of trimming:

  • anti-aging. In autumn, the "parent" bush is cut off, leaving 20-30 cm above the soil surface. With the arrival of spring, the sprouts are divided and transplanted (5-7 main shoots are left on each);
  • sanitary. Carried out throughout the summer cottage season

    (2-3 times). Includes overgrowth destruction (without damaging the main root, cut with a shovel to a depth of 10 cm), elimination of dry and diseased branches.

Freshly cut branches are preferably burned.

Optimal pruning times:

  • September - pruning at soil level (to get a good harvest next year);
  • November December (a good harvest will please by the fall of this year);
  • young raspberries are cut at the root in the fall. Old - in the spring (better in the last month), before bud break. To prolong fruiting, pinch off individual tops of the shoots.
  • keeping the "adult" two-year-old stems, their pruning should be planned in the middle of summer after the first harvest. The remaining young shoots will give a second, autumn harvest.

Basic rules for pruning remontant raspberries.

  1. Before cutting, the tool must be disinfected and sharpened thoroughly. (a blunt pruner "chews" the stems and opens the gate for spores of parasitic fungi and pathogens).
  2. Cleans the area from brushwood, leaves and weeds (it is easier to find growth on cleaned soil).
  3. It is necessary to cut with pruning shears all shoots of any height under the root, without leaving hemp.
  4. Fertilizers are applied: rabbit or bird droppings, compost, rotted manure.
  5. Water abundantly.
  6. Mulch with straw, hay, needles, sawdust, grass.
  7. You do not need to rush to cut a young seedling until the first shoot grows on it by 10 cm.

Remember! If you leave the shoots for the second year, the remontant raspberry will turn into a regular one.

After proper pruning, the raspberry will become “inviting and welcoming”.
