In order for young trees to adapt to new conditions and withstand the cold, it is important to choose the planting time, taking into account the characteristics of the region. It is best to plant in October-November. If we are talking about the middle lane, then the ideal time is the end of September and October.
Weather conditions and other features
Saplings are planted a month before the first frost. A cloudy day without wind is suitable for the procedure. Direct UV rays can be harmful. If the soil contains a lot of clay, then it is better to fertilize it with humus, peat or sand.
It is necessary to equip the bottom of the hole with drainage from branches and stones. The pit is shallow. If the soil is sandy and depleted, then it is recommended to add peat, humus, potash fertilizers. When planting an apple tree in the ground with surface groundwater, it is necessary to make mounds up to one meter high.
How to choose a landing site
The territory should be:
- well lit;
- sheltered from the cold wind;
- without close occurrence of groundwater;
- with fertile soil;
- with good air and moisture conductivity.
Apple trees love soil that has a low acidity level, up to 7.0 pH.
Between planting apple trees in one area, it should take from 4 to 5 years. It is allowed that dill, strawberries or raspberries grow nearby. The proximity of an apple tree with a plum, apricot, viburnum, carrots, potatoes is undesirable.
Selection of quality seedlings
It is better to stop at 1 or 2 years of age for planting stock. The annual material has no shoots. Two-year-olds have several branches. Seedlings are purchased from good nurseries or well-known stores.
It is important to inspect the planting material when buying. You cannot buy products with defects in the root system and bark, with spots and growths, rotten and weak roots. The height of an ideal seedling should not exceed 2.5 meters. Its stem is always light green.
Preparing for landing
The area should be cleared and dug up a couple of months before the start of work. You can fertilize the soil. The pits are prepared 2 or 3 weeks before the procedure. Its maximum diameter is 100 cm and its depth is about 80 cm.
The soil that was extracted when digging a hole must be mixed with a bucket of humus, a glass of the mixture with potassium and a glass of wood ash.
If there is a dry rhizome, soak it in a bucket for about a day.
Landing
First you need to stick the stake into the hole. It is necessary to maintain the seedling until it takes root. Two-thirds of the hole must be filled with fertilized soil. The seedling is placed in the center of the hole. The roots are evenly distributed around the circle. The hole should be filled with soil to the brim.
Next, you need to pour about two buckets of water onto the seedling. The near-trunk zone can be mulched with straw, peat, sawdust. The layer is up to 7 cm. The trunk of an apple seedling is tied to a stake.
Better to land with two people. One person holds the trunk at the desired height, and the other pours soil into the hole. A distance of about four meters must be observed between the apple trees.
