Why is smoke coming from Russian ships, because it increases their visibility

From time to time, photos or videos with the participation of the Russian fleet show very strange ships that create some kind of incredible smoke screen during their turn. It doesn't look very nice, and most importantly, it radically increases the visibility of the domestic ship. Why do the courts smoke so much, and is there at least some rational sense in all this?

In the army, even painting grass makes sense! And even more so in the navy. But seriously, there is an explanation for the smoking domestic ships, and it is quite rational. Surely many (at least from the memes from the Internet) remember that story with the smoking aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov". In fact, he is not the only one in the Russian navy. To date, Russia has at least three more heavily smoking ships during the course. And there were more of them before. All these are mostly old ships that the Russian fleet inherited from the Soviet Union. However, if someone has already thought that Soviet designers broke firewood when designing, then he is mistaken.

In addition to the already mentioned "Admiral Kuznetsov", the destroyers of the "Sarych" type of project 965 smoke very strongly in the Russian fleet. During the Soviet era, 17 such ships were built. The project of the ships was laid in the 1970s. Most of the ships saw the light of day just before the collapse of the Soviet Union. A distinctive feature of the 965 project was the use of the latest 3rd generation boiler and turbine units (KTU). These were made in Ukraine at the Southern Gas Turbine Plant and at the Kirov Plant in Leningrad. Actually, the project 965 with power plants was provided by the Leningraders, since the guys from Ukraine had other orders.

We chose KTU for destroyers for a reason. In 1973, the oil crisis broke out. It quickly became clear that such an incident would not be the last. Most Soviet warships used diesel as fuel. However, diesel was quite expensive, and therefore KTUs working on the development of crude oil and fuel oil were unexpectedly in great demand. It was decided to create at least one series of such ships "just in case." This is how 17 destroyers of the Sarych family appeared.

All of them were equipped with KTU GTZA-674 with a capacity of 100 thousand horsepower. For comparison, US destroyers of the same generation used General Electric LM2500 units with 80 thousand horsepower. Soviet boilers smoke precisely because of the operation on the same fuel oil, as well as because of the specific cooling system. That is why, when the boiler is fully warmed up, the ship starts to smoke less. Thus, for all the seeming absurdity, such ships were a real miracle of technology for the 1980s. They could have served further, because Soviet designers made "Sarychi" with an eye on the impressive modernization potential. However, not without the help of 1991, three destroyers of this class remain in service today.
